A Renaissance fireplace surround was the prototype. This example was probably the most elaborately constructed instrument of its kind at the exhibition and is one of the few surviving pieces of exposition furniture. As was common, the piano was probably dismantled or reduced in size following the exposition for convenient transit."},{"label":"Subjects (AAT)","value":["Upright pianos","Pianos"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Piano"]},{"label":"Bibliography","value":"Book: David A. Surmounting the piano is an intricately designed entablature composed of a broken pediment, a central tablet flanked by pilasters and the segments of the broken pediment, and two carved birds gripping torches facing the center of the pediment. Atop the central tablet is an urn finial with spool- and folded-collar-turning, topped with an acorn and decorated with gilded inlay. The flat and splayed plinth on which the finial is mounted surmounts a keystone framed and decorated with gilded inlay. Vertical lines of gilded inlay outline the front edges of the cornice. The breaks in the pediment create three front-facing sections. Carved, open-mouthed dragons enhanced by foliage and volutes outline the breaks. The tympanum of the arched pediment segments is carved with a classical motif. The center tablet, which is flanked by slightly projected pilasters and conforms to the astragal top, is outlined in decorative gilding. An emblem of gilded acanthus and bellflowers, volutes, scalloping, and a subtle fleur-de-lis is featured at top center of the entablature. The sides of the case are built up with decorative moldings and applied decoration to widen from the front to the rear of the case. Volute brackets attached to the case sides support the pediment. The case front has three sections: an upper panel, the keybed, and a lower panel. The upper panel features three decorative tablets separated by Corinthian-style pilasters, the tops of which project and have rosettes above the volute capitals. The tablets feature gilded classical motifs. The center tablet has an inlaid, oval frame around two crossed torches. Intricately carved side arms with forward scrolls and gilded inlay decoration flank the keybed. The fallboard is framed in applied molding and has decorative gilded inlay in bell flowers, scrolls, and curves. At center is a knob. The keyboard rail has central inlaid decoration. S-curved supports carved and inlaid with classical motifs support the keybed and flank the lower panel. The lower panel has two decorative tablets secured at the corners with rosettes presumably covering screws. The instrument has two pedals."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"12/4/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Transcription based on information supplied by the High Museum of Art (1983).
