The bed frame has high vertical side rails that fit into grooves in the head and footboard. The connection is reinforced with large bolts in pockets in the side boards. The side rails have triangular extensions at the head and foot of the bed, likely constructed from additional boards rather than being continuous with the rails. The outer surface and upper edge of the side rails and extensions, as well as the inner surface of the extensions, are veneered with figured maple. Half-round moldings with ball finial accents at each end are laid over the veneer on the upper edge of the side boards and extensions. These moldings are turned maple, decorated to resemble bamboo, with regular flared and incised rings enhanced by black paint. The side rails also have bamboo decorated half round moldings along the bottom edge. Attached to the inner surface of the side rails are horizontal rails of an unidentified ring porous hardwood. Wooden slats of the same wood are laid across the width of the bed on these rails to support the bedding.  The headboard is a tall, straight rectangle with rounded upper corners. There are two framed, recessed panels. The lower frame element is the same height as the side rails of the bed. The panels are outlined on the sides and top with half-round maple moldings, decorated to resemble bamboo. The moldings are punctuated at the lower ends with ball drop accents. The upper corner pieces of the moldings are curved to echo the rounded corners of the headboard. The right corner piece of molding on the left panel is missing, and the ball drops of the molding on the right panel are missing as well. The wood visible on both the front and back of the headboard is figured maple; without better access to the back of the headboard, it is unclear whether it is made from solid boards or if both sides are veneered. The headboard sides and top are outlined with turned maple columns, decorated to resemble bamboo. The columns have curved corner pieces. The inner edges of the columns are cut flat and are affixed to the headboard with dowels. At the top center of the headboard is a gallery, made with turned maple spindles decorated to resemble bamboo. The gallery consists of two horizontal spindles with ball accents on each end, supported by two vertical spindles each; attached to the top of the horizontal spindles is a third horizontal spindle decorated in the same way, supported by two vertical spindles on each side.  The footboard of the bed is constructed similarly to the headboard. The footboard has a single recessed panel across its width. The panel is outlined with bamboo decorated half-round moldings on the sides, top, and bottom; the moldings have mitered lower corners and curved pieces at the upper corners. The footboard also has bamboo-decorated half-round moldings along the bottom, with ball finial accents. The panel and framing elements are figured maple and are most likely veneered but possibly solid boards. The footboard sides and top are outlined with turned maple columns, decorated to resemble bamboo. The columns have curved corner pieces. The inner edges of the columns are cut flat and are affixed to the headboard with dowels.  The bed has squat columnar feet at each corner, which are continuous with the columns outlining the head and footboards. Additionally, the bed has wooden castors with ferrous metal shafts. These are inset diagonally from each wooden foot. The castors are mounted in metal brackets, attached to ring porous hardwood support blocks. These blocks are screwed to the underside of the side rails of the bed. The secondary woods are ring porous but cannot be identified. The moldings are accented by black paint and held on by nails. Screws are visible from the underside of the piece to hold on the castors. Vaughn, who advertised primarily as an upholsterer. Vaughn was active in Boston from about 1862-about 1874. City directories identify him as an upholsterer employed by Henry A. Turner or Henry A. Turner & Co. from 1862-1867. He is listed under his own name from 1868-1869 and under John J. Vaughn & Co. from 1870-1873. In 1872 and 1873, Charles J. Blaney is listed as a partner in the firm. Some of the city directory listings for John J. Vaughn & Co. state that the company manufactured furniture as well. It is possible, however, that Vaughn only retailed the set and that it was made elsewhere; the faux bamboo treatment is commonly associated with New York City.  John J. Vaughn relocated to Haverhill, Massachusetts, sometime between 1874 and 1876. An 1877 Haverhill newspaper includes an advertisement for J. J. Vaughn, Interior and Exterior Decorator.
