Grounds.  Probably no better grounds for the purpose could have been found in the United States,   136 acres are taken for the use of the exhibition. Their natural advantages of position,   easy access, and the beauty and wildness of the grounds, are increased by artificial   means, such as ponds, brooks, fountains and flowers. But one of the greatest advantages   of the location is its nearness to a city of such interest, historical and otherwise, as   Philadelphia. Aside from the natural advantages, it is a most appropriate place for the   holding of this Centennial Exhibition. The buildings are all beautiful specimens of   architecture, the handsomest of which is Memorial Hall, which is to be permanent, as a   monument of the centennial of American independence. An omission is found in the scarcity of   shade trees near the buildings. In walking from one building to another, one is exposed to   the full rays of the sun, which is by no means pleasant, especially if walking on one of the   concrete walks, which reflect the rays of the sun. A band of music here and there would   be an agreeable addition, but they are not to be found*. The happy choice of grounds   contributes in no small degree to the success of the exhibition. 236 acres are enclosed.    The Buildings  are fine specimens of architecture, and very showy at a distance, but with the exception   of Memorial Hall, they are for only temporary purposes, and consequently of not very   expensive material, wood, iron and glass being the principal materials. They are all well   suited to the purpose for which they were built. The number of miles to be traversed in each building, in order to   pass through each aisle, has been estimated as follows: M. B., 11 1/3, Mem. H., 1 Â¾,   Mach. H. 5 Â¼, A. H., 2 7/8, H. H., Â¾. About 75 acres are under cover, including the   annexes.    Main Building.  contains miscellaneous exhibits, for which no special building has been provided   elsewhere. I spent about 3 days here. The model School House from Belgium was furnished not   only with maps and scientific apparatus, but with cases of stuffed birds, bugs and   butterflies, minerals, &c., the whole making a cosy and inviting room. From Italy there   was a large and most beautiful collection of jewelry, mosaics, corals, filagree work, &c.   This was always surrounded by a crowd of ladies. From Great Britain and Ireland the   display was principally of carpets, cloth, cutlery, &c., the products of their manufactories.   The carpets shown here were very fine. From Peru there was an interesting collection of   minerals and idols, There was a good bust of Gen. Grant here, made entirely of wire,   which I recognized at once. There were unique displays from China and Japan,   interesting principally for their oddity. From China there was some very fine carved work   in ivory. Very high prices were   asked for them, and they were purchased as curiosities. From Tunis there was a mosaic   lion taken from the ruins of Carthage â€” price $5,000. In the French department there was   a fine representation of the Birth of Christ, the figures being of wax and life size. A large   quantity of the finest and most costly laces in the world were exhibited by a Parisian firm.   A curious kind of carriage was exhibited here, the motive power being furnished by a dog   in each wheel â€” the same principle which is sometimes used in wood-sawing machines.   Russia had one of the most attractive and beautiful displays in the building. There were   vases, snuffboxes, knick-knacks, trinkets, jewelry, &c., of beautiful and unique designs,   and of fine material and workmanship, elegant cloth of silver and gold, fine furs, &c.   Mantels, bureau-tops, jewelry, &c., were made of a mottled green and white ore, called   malachite. The skeleton of a gigantic lizard came from New Jersey   Tiffany &Co., of NY. showed a splendid collection of jewelry and diamonds. Several   diamond necklaces, bracelets, &c., of great value and dazzling brilliancy were shown   here. The Gorham Co. of Providence had a magnificent display of silver ware, among   which is a large and elaborately worked vase, called the Century Vase. The Meriden   Brittannia Co. made a fine display of their ware, which closely resembles silver. Several   firms from Philadelphia and New York had splendid displays of jewelry. A fine diamond   scarf-pin was worth $12,000 Switzerland excelled in her display of watches. Very   handsome and costly parlor and chamber sets were exhibited by American and foreign   exhibitors. Dogs and cocks, stuffed,   immediately after the fight, clubs, whips, &c., with which horses had been beaten, hoofs   torn from horses, eyes knocked out, legs broken, &c., &c., together with a display of   pictures, form a curious but disgusting sight. A fine display of revolvers and fire arms   was made by several American firms. There was a large music-box or organ in the hall,   which on turning a crank, would play, sounding exactly like a full brass band. The piano   manufacturers were well represented. There were two immense organs in the building,   which furnished music at times during the day. The expressions of their faces show that   they are throwing their whole souls into the work. The Minute Man of â€™75, a statuette,   explains itself. The Battle of Gettysburg is one of the largest pictures on exhibition,   covering one whole side of a room. It is worthy of half a dayâ€™s study. The figures in the   foreground are life size, and the bloody wounds of the fallen, their positions, and the   expressions of their faces, are very natural, as are also the expressions and attitudes of   those fighting. Among the   numerous beautiful pieces of statuary from Italy, there are: â€“ Boy with a broken cup, Girl   & Eagle, both true to life. â€œRataplanâ€ represents a little boy drumming. Very good. One   Skein of Thread. Seizing the Turkey. Liberty â€“ two youths who look as if they meant   â€œliberty or death.â€ â€œColdâ€ represents a poor, barefooted girl, her ragged shawl wrapped   tightly about her, tears on her face, her expression, position and everything about her,   showing that she is suffering from the cold. This is a woman, with disheveled   hair and wild look fleeing from the destruction of that day. Her wild, terrified look is   especially noticeable. There are several statues of â€œMichael Angelo at Work.â€ Loveâ€™s Net   is the figure of a woman, with a net wound around her body. For skillful workmanship,   this struck me as one of the best, if not the best, pieces of work that I saw. The beautifully   modeled form of the woman, the surest expression of her face, the graceful twining of the   net, through the meshes of which her form can be discerned, all combine to render it a   very beautiful and attractive work of art. A good sized building, put up by the states of Kansas and Colorado, was devoted to an   exhibition of the products of these states, and a very creditable and interesting exhibition   they made. Their grain and minerals, birds animals and insects were all well represented.   The display of minerals, of gold and silver ore, was especially fine. One piece of common   looking stone, which a man could have encircled with his arms, was worth $10,000, on   account of the gold and silver it contained. The collection of minerals was very large, and   one of the finest on the grounds. On one side of the room, a space was arranged in   imitation of the side of a mountain, with a little stream trickling down the side. A â€œcaveâ€   at the foot of the â€œmountainâ€ led to a reception room. This imitation of a mountain was   covered with stuffed animals, natives of the two states aforesaid.
