(53.3 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Federal-style desk and bookcase composed of three parts: an upper bookcase, a center tambour-front case, and a lower chest of drawers on legs.    Upper case:  The top of the bookcase is composed of one board attached with half-blind dovetails. The cove moldings at the top of the bookcase are attached using glue blocks. A solid, narrow gallery is attached to the side and front edges of the top with glue blocks. The gallery is flat along the sides and curves upward to meet the top corners of a rectangular plinth centered on the front edge of the bookcase top. Matching urn and spike finials are mounted on small rectangular plinths in the front corners of the bookcase top as well as on the central plinth. The central plinth is decorated with figured birch or maple veneer. The bookcase sides are each composed of one board. The interior sides of the bookcase are rabbeted to provide adjustable shelving. The back of the bookcase is composed of two vertical boards with panel and frame construction. The back is attached with nails. The case bottom is composed of one board attached with nails at the back and dovetails at the sides. Mortises are cut into the dovetails on the bottom of the bookcase so as to accept the tenons on the top of the center case. There is ogee molding at the base of the bookcase. The bookcase has two panel-framed doors with glass lights. Each door has two rows of three panes of glass; the lights in the upper row are in the form of Gothic arched. The door fronts are veneered. Applied bead molding surrounds the glass panels. Each door has diamond-shaped inlay around a keyhole surround.    Center case: The top of the central section of the piece is made of one board. The front and side edges of the top board are decorated with checkerboard inlay. Protruding tenons at the top of the central section of the piece, near the back corners, attach the upper bookcase to the center case. The top of the central section is finished. The sides of the central section are each composed of one board. The back of the central section is one board attached with nails. The bottom of the central section is composed of one board, nailed at the back and dovetailed at the sides. The left and right front edges of the case have inlaid pilasters of figured light wood surrounded by stringing. Two tambour doors flank a central prospect unit. The fixed stiles of the tambour doors have light wood stringing at the front. The tambour doors open to reveal two drawers above three pigeonholes on each side of the central prospect unit. The pigeonholes have serpentine valences. The pigeonholes dividers are faced with applied mahogany strips. The interior drawers have solid fronts and full-height sides. The drawer bottoms are each composed of one board with the grain running side to side and chamfering at the front and sides. Dovetail construction joins the drawer sides to the fronts, as well as the drawer sides to the backs. The drawer bottoms are let into grooves at the fronts and sides and nailed to the undersides of the backs. The drawers rest on dust boards. The drawer dividers are let into grooves with applied mahogany strips at the fronts. The central prospect door has bread board construction. The exterior of the door is veneered and has an inlaid oval tablet of figured birch veneer surrounded by light and dark wood stringing. The sides of the door are flanked by alternating light and dark trapezoidal inlay. The front of the prospect door has a keyhole surrounded by light wood inlay. The prospect door opens to reveal one large compartment.    Lower case: The top of the desk has a large rectangular open space where the tambour section of the piece joins the desk. The front portion of the top has a fixed board and a hinged frame-and-panel leaf that opens to create a flat writing surface covered in red baize. The exterior of the leaf is veneered. The sides of the desk are each composed of one board. The back of the case consists of a single board attached with mortise and tenon joints. The desk has four therm legs that terminate in therm feet (double-tapered). The legs attach to the case with mortise and tenon joints. The fronts of the front legs are inlaid with panels of horizontal mahogany veneer surrounded by decorative banding and inlay of alternating light and dark squares. The lower case has three graduated doors and two lopers. The front edges of the lopers have light wood stringing. The drawer fronts are veneered, inlaid with alternating light and dark triangles, and surrounded by bead molding. The brass, oval bail handles on the drawers have been replaced. The original pulls were wider and attached with three screws. Each drawer originally had three pulls. The center pulls have been removed, and the holes have been painted over. Each drawer has a brass keyhole surround. The drawers rest on original runners, which are nailed into place and dovetailed to the front rail.  Lower drawer construction: The sides of the lower drawer are full height. There are applied running strips on the bottom. The drawer bottom is composed of one board with the grain running side to side with chamfering at the front and sides. The drawer bottom is reinforced with glue blocks. Dovetail construction joins the sides of the drawer to the back, as well as the sides of the drawer to the front.
