Although the chair has elements associated with the Federal style, its design details and construction indicate modern construction. The trapezoidal back with flat crest rail tapers slightly as it meets the seat. The back arches back slightly. The trapezoidal seat bows out slightly along the seat front. The seat rails are mortise and tenoned to the front legs. The seat and back have been reupholstered in a red patterned textile. The underside of the seat bottom is covered and cannot be examined, but corner blocks are visible. There are nail holes from the original over-the rail upholstery visible on the underside of the seat frame. The therm front legs and are continuous with the S-shaped arm supports. There is bead molding along the front edges of the front legs and arm supports and a gentle curved profile to the front surface of both. The arm supports are mortise and tenoned into the S-curved arms. The front ends of the arms are capped with an arched line of bead molding, aligning with the molding on the arm supports. The outer surface of the arms is flat sawn while the inner surface is slightly curved. The rear legs are stump and attach to the frame under the upholstery."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"10/10/2016"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"None found"},{"label":"Materials","value":"Mahogany"},{"label":"Style","value":["Federal"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date provided by Gore Place Society."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1920"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Possibly made in or around Boston due to characteristics of design and construction."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Vicinity of Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Other Name","value":"Martha Washington chair; Upholstered armchair"},{"label":"Object Type","value":["Chair"]},{"label":"Object Use","value":"Seating furniture"},{"label":"Category","value":"Furniture"},{"label":"Title","value":"Lolling chair"},{"label":"Date Modified","value":"10/10/2016"}],"description":"Lolling chair","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/f063feb1-031f-4779-9b8e-e54c1e26a582/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_2015-5048-001","height":1200,"width":865,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/556953b1-ade6-4724-b090-9ea4e81270b7/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/556953b1-ade6-4724-b090-9ea4e81270b7","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1200,"width":865},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/f063feb1-031f-4779-9b8e-e54c1e26a582/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/556953b1-ade6-4724-b090-9ea4e81270b7/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/f063feb1-031f-4779-9b8e-e54c1e26a582/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_2015-5048-002","height":1200,"width":796,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/5e83e0ca-c218-4029-88f7-09406a0050cd/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/5e83e0ca-c218-4029-88f7-09406a0050cd","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":1200,"width":796},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/f063feb1-031f-4779-9b8e-e54c1e26a582/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/5e83e0ca-c218-4029-88f7-09406a0050cd/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/556953b1-ade6-4724-b090-9ea4e81270b7/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/logo"}
