Adjustable, upholstered, and racked-back seat has a ovolo-shaped and molded crest rail with beaded edges. The ends of the crest rail rabbet into rectangular notches on the back of the side stiles and are fitted with adjustable chains, secured through the front of the stiles, that allow movement to the back of the seat. The side stiles are bead-molded along the edges on the front and at the top of each are small urn finials. The stiles are continuous with the legs and terminals, which are stump and cant backward. The long, rectangular seat frame has a wide interior rabbet to which the canvas bottom is nailed. The front and side rails have bead molding along the outside, upper edge. Ten bipartite stretchers, six side stretchers (three on each side) and four transverse stretchers (including one at the front) are all spool-turned at center and baluster-turned with creased arrow tips. The side stretchers are joined to the upper leg blocks and the transverse stretchers are joined to the lower leg blocks. The bed stands on six block-and-compressed-baluster-on-ring-turned legs with bun feet. The upholstery pictured is cream-colored with a lattice pattern. As of 1981, the bed has been reupholstered with a modern printed cotton fabric in a floral design in shades of blue, red, and beige with red silk cord tassels at the end of the mattress. The canvas bottom is not original. The rabbets in the seat rails indicate that the frames originally had laced sacking bottoms to support a quilted pad. The original cross-slat between the seat rails has been removed. The chains added to the reclining back are modern. The second leg from the right rear was removed during examination and an old auger hole in the rail conforms the antiquity of the object. Old upholstery nail holes are visible where part of the sacking bottom was removed. Fragment of a wrought nail missing its head was recovered."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"1/30/2019"},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library identifies the primary wood used as soft maple and the secondary wood as soft and hard maple based on microanalysis performed around 2006."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Maple; Cotton textile; Silk textile; Varnish; Upholstery materials"},{"label":"Style","value":["William and Mary"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Approximate date range provided by Forman (1988).
