(53.3 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Empire-style klismos side chair made of mahogany with chestnut as a possible secondary wood. The back of the chair is curved for comfort with a horizontally curved tablet crest rail. The ends of the tablet feature two relief-carved inward facing scrolls with five-pointed leafage facing toward the center. There is a rectangular panel of figured mahogany veneer with concave ends in the center of the tablet. The tablet is set into notches at the top front of the molded vertical rear stiles. The tablet has been reattached to the rear stiles with pegs through the tops of the stiles. Immediately below the tablet is a thick carved slat with four central rows of swag drapery and three hanging scrolls at each end. The rear stiles are joined to the seat rail and are not continuous with the rear legs.    The trapezoidal slip seat rests on four corner blocks which are screwed and glued to the seat rails. The seat has been reupholstered. A dust cover on the underside of the slip seat obscures the construction of the slip seat frame. Nail holes through the center of the front and back seat rails indicate that the slip seat was attached to the frame at one time. The side rails feature a mahogany veneered decorative rail above the unadorned lower rail. The top of the decorative rail continues the bead edge molding from the rear stiles while the front end is carved with acanthus leaves. The acanthus leaf carving continues at the top of the front sabre legs. Below the carving, the fronts of the legs feature bead edge molding matching the seat rails and rear stiles. There is a groove under the front left seat rail where a metal L-shaped bracket may have once attached to the left leg. Discoloration of the wood under the front seat rail indicates that there were front knee blocks at one time. The rear sabre legs are mortise and tenoned into the rear seat rail. Both rear legs have knee blocks while the front legs do not. There is damage to the front right knee and rear left leg and knee block.
