Surmounting the drumhead is a cast, compressed ball and eagle finial mounted to a trapezoidal plinth. A hinged circular door opens to reveal a white-painted dial with Roman numerals, pierced hands, and a winding hole. Fretted brass brackets flank the waist, which features an ??glomis?? tablet decorated with a foliate design. At the bottom, within a painted banner, is the inscription reading: [Z. Gates]. The throat is framed in gilded, twisted molding with blocks at the corners. The pendulum box has an ??glomis?? tablet featuring a painted scene of Boston harbor with ships at the dock and a cross-hatched window to view the pendulum. Painted foliage surrounds the Boston scene and framing the panel is gilded, twisted molding with blocks at each corner.
