The print was engraved and mounted on linen backing by Joseph Strutt (1749-1802); the original painting was done by Robert Edge Pine (1730-1788) and published in 1781. Pine was a painter of historical and theatrical subjects and came to the United States, to Philadelphia in 1784, and opened a gallery. Among the paintings displayed was his allegory of 1778 depicting the division of Englishmen and Americans and hope for immediate reconciliation post Revolutionary War. It took two to three years to produce a print of the painting. According to Fowble (1991), Dearborn, a Boston framemaker, gilder, and carver, and maker of this frame, affixed his own label to the back and (possibly) another one explaining the allegory. The Winterthur object record does credit Dearborn with putting on the explanatory label and suggests that the label was added in London. The original painting was destroyed in a fire in 1803. Inscribed on the bottom of the print, under the image, is: [Joseph Strutt sculp] in the lower right corner; [R.E. Pine pinxt 1778] in the lower left corner; [Publish'd according to Act of Parliament, October the 6 th 1781 by R.E. Pine Albermarle Street LONDON.] in the lower center, beneath the title. On the laid paper is a watermark of: [DUPUY FIN AUVERGNE 1742]. (See E. The face of the frame has a gilded outer band of dentil and stepped moldings and grooves. The black-painted inner section of the frame is half-round molded. Around the inner gilt liner, which is decoratively carved, are grooves. The sides of the frame are painted black. The print depicts an allegorical scene of a group of figures in front of a burning city and among remnants of a battle. Figures in the print include America, weeping against an obelisk, a winged angel in the sky carrying a palm leaf, a partially-clad, winged angel, carrying a palm leaf, Virtue holding a club in his left hand, Liberty holding a liberty pole, Concord (the lady with flowers in her hair), to her right, Industry, and Plenty, who is carrying a cornucopia in her left arm and a grapevine on a spear in her right, leading nude children and animals. In the background are sailing vessels and foliage. Affixed to the back are paper labels.
