The rear rail of the sofa back is a cylindrical pole with a projected center. At either end of the rail are intricately carved finials with volutes and petals resembling flower buds. The space between the rear rail and the angled sofa back is carved with acanthus volutes. The armrests are large, cylindrical, and each fitted with a drawer. Each circular drawer front is upholstered with sunburst-pleated fabric with a drop pull at the center. The wooden rings framing each drawer front are carved with acanthus-inspired designs. Below the arms, the sides of the sofa are framed with recessed, veneered panels. The front rail is rounded. The four carved legs have ionic capitals, flowers, and foliage and taper to stump feet that stand on castors."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"12/4/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Printed, paper labels inside the drawer in each armrest: [WILLIAM HANCOCK, / UPHOLSTERER, / 39 & 41 MARKET STREET, / BOSTON]."},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"Mahogany, Maple, Chestnut, and Rosewood identified as materials according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1962)."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Mahogany; Maple; Chestnut; Rosewood; Unidentified textile; Unidentified metal; Upholstery materials"},{"label":"Style","value":["Pillar and Scroll","Empire"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range based on the timeframe during which Hancock was located at 39 & 41 Market Street, the address on the label."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1825 - D:00 M:00 Y:1829"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Boston indicated by label."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Basis of Maker Attribution","value":"Labeled by Hancock, who operated primarily as an upholsterer.
