The table appears in Bright's bill as one of ?Ç£2 Dineing (sic) Tables,?Ç¥ and comprises the sole survivor of the pair. That documentation links the table to its Boston origins and maker and suggests what 48 shillings could buy in 1770. By purchasing two dining tables, Bowman insured flexibility as the two could be used individually or butted next to each other to accommodate a larger party. It was taken by the latter in 1895 to the California home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Goodwin Bixby, who inherited it in 1903 and left it to her children in 1909. The surviving child, Florence L. (98.8 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Chippendale-style Pembroke table made of mahogany with birch and white pine secondary woods.  Table top is in three sections, with the outer two sections being the folding leaves. The top and leaves are each one board. Each leaf is supported by two swing rails hinged to the side rails. The edges of the table top are molded. The wooden brace beneath the center of the lapped shelf is a later addition. The frame supports a drawer, which has a shaped escutcheon and bail pull with a locking mechanism and keyhole. The dovetailed drawer slides on a drawer support nailed to each side rail. Drawer stops are nailed to the side rails at the back corners of the frame. A series of small horizontal glue blocks secure the top to the frame. The drawer bottom is nailed to the rabbeted edges of the front and sides and has no applied runners. The four Marlborough legs are braced by stretchers taking an x-shape with a center with concave edges.
