(49.5 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Splat-back side chair with turned legs and low-relief fan carved into crest rail. There is quarter round carved molding along the bottom edge of the crest rail and arching along top profile of the fan. The crest rail is mortise and tenoned into the stile, where over-cuts are visible. The seat is trapezoidal in shape and framed with slip seat. The frame is mortise and tenoned. Straight-sided corner blocks have been screwed to slip seat and nailed into seat frame. Leather upholstery is old, but may not be original. The seat also has a cotton dust cover, made from a loosely woven brown colored cotton. The chair has baluster legs at the front with twist carving ending in reverse ring, block, ring and ball foot continuous with leg. The rear block legs have an angled profile and are joined to the seat rail with mortise and tenon. The chair has H-stretchers, likely mortise-and-tenoned. The chair shows significant signs of wear and has had many repairs and multiple varnish campaigns (visible with under ultraviolet light).    The front sides of the rear legs have two vertically aligned holes just below the stretcher. There are no corresponding holes on the front. The undersides of right and left stretchers have seemingly related holes of similar diameter.    Cataloguers and Wendy Swanton (curator) suspect chair may be early-twentieth century assemblage of older components.
