The diarist travels by post coach, covered wagon, steamboat, and canoe across central and western New York, roughly along the route of the then under construction Erie Canal. There are frequent references to and descriptions of the work on the canal, together with descriptions of the landscapes, towns, roads, houses, and taverns along the route. The writer discusses her stops at the Auburn Prison, the Oneida Indian Reservation, and Niagara Falls. Additionally, she gives observations on religions (she herself was a devout believer in God), thoughts about Canada, unfavorable remarks about the Irish, and details about many of the towns along the way. Her visits to Buffalo and Niagara Falls elicited comments on war in general, and the War of 1812 in particular. The diary ends with the party still at Niagara Falls./nEvidence points to the unnamed author being Maria Jay Banyer, a widow who seems to have lived in Utica, New York, at one time. She travelled with Mr. and Mrs. Sedgwick (whom she calls cousins), Catherine Sedgwick, Mrs. Watson, Robert, and little Theodore Sedgwick. She was the daughter of John Jay (1745-1829, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court) and his wife Sarah Van Burgh Livingston (1756-1802). Maria was born in Spain on Feb. 20, 1782, while her father was serving as the American minister to that country. She married Goldsborough Banyer (1775-1806) on April 22, 1801. They had two children, both of whom died young. Maria Jay Banyer died Nov. 21, 1856, and is buried in the Jay family cemetery in Westchester County, New York./nFrom information provided by a researcher, it appears that Mr. and Mrs. Sedgwick were Theodore Sedgwick II (1780-1839) and his wife Susan Anne Livingston Ridley (1788-1867), who was an author. Susan Sedgwick was a cousin of Maria Jay Banyer, related on the Livingston side. Young Theodore would be their son (1811-1859; as an adult he was a lawyer and author). Theodore II had a sister Catharine Maria Sedgwick (1789-1867), and she was an author as well. Mrs. Watson was possibly yet another sister: Frances Pamela Sedgwick (1778-1842), who was married to Ebenezer Watson. Robert was a brother (Robert Sedgwick, 1787-1841)."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1821"},{"label":"Creator","value":"Maria Jay Banyer (1782-1856)"},{"label":"Place","value":"New York"},{"label":"Format","value":["Manuscript"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Diaries","Women-Diaries","Voyages and travels","New York (State)-Description and travel"]},{"label":"Identifier","value":"Document 214\n90x057"},{"label":"Rights","value":["No Copyright - United States"]},{"label":"Source Collection","value":["Maria Jay Banyer Diary (Doc. 214)"]}],"description":"Diary of Maria Jay Banyer","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/e3c0386a-8a3d-4c62-b0ab-f059fe7d3e24/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"doc214_90x057_000_front-cover","height":2036,"width":1322,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c7919ef1-fb21-4769-8d49-03abf6913fff/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c7919ef1-fb21-4769-8d49-03abf6913fff","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2036,"width":1322},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/e3c0386a-8a3d-4c62-b0ab-f059fe7d3e24/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c7919ef1-fb21-4769-8d49-03abf6913fff/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/e3c0386a-8a3d-4c62-b0ab-f059fe7d3e24/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"doc214_90x057_001","height":1905,"width":1148,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/676b0b69-00f5-4b2a-acb1-2ce8e6365953/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/676b0b69-00f5-4b2a-acb1-2ce8e6365953","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1905,"width":1148},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/e3c0386a-8a3d-4c62-b0ab-f059fe7d3e24/canvas/_2","metadata":[{"label":"Transcription","value":"On Monday 21st [May – crossed out] June 1821 – Having been prevailed upon by my dear kind sister to join Mr & Mrs Sedgwick’s party to Niagara in the hope that the journey wd be of service to my health & spirits I left home after fervently commanding my beloved parent & family to our Heavenly preserver & Benefactor & imploring his support & protection for myself – The ride to Rye was very solemn & altho’ my hope and heart were stayed on God & my mind composed in consequence I felt it to be a serious [thing – crossed out] undertaking – but as these"}]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/676b0b69-00f5-4b2a-acb1-2ce8e6365953/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/e3c0386a-8a3d-4c62-b0ab-f059fe7d3e24/canvas/_3","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"doc214_90x057_002","height":1889,"width":1174,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/0e849704-59cc-4d7c-a676-4d80c456688c/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/0e849704-59cc-4d7c-a676-4d80c456688c","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1889,"width":1174},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/e3c0386a-8a3d-4c62-b0ab-f059fe7d3e24/canvas/_3","metadata":[{"label":"Transcription","value":"kind of reflections would only [illegible] to counteract the intention of my journey endeavored to dissipate them by reading - Left dear little ^Helen^ who was my companion & Jenny at Rye & after dinner went on to Cousin Matilda’s – dreadfully fatigued & almost discouraged – recd every possible kindness – proceeded 19th to N.
