The upper case has a broken scroll pediment with complex molding along the top edge of the pediment. Water-gilded flame finials are mounted on top of rectangular plinths at the front corners and on a rectangular plinth that extends from the center front of the pediment. Below the cornice is a central tall drawer with a gilded central arched recess with a scallop carving; shorter drawers flank the central drawer. The area of the case front above these drawers and below the pediment is outlined in light wood stringing. Six-pointed inlaid stars flank the central drawer and surmount the shorter drawers. The lower edges of these three drawers are in alignment. Below are two side-by-side drawers and three full width, graduated drawers. Fluted pilasters flank the drawers. The sides of the upper case are each inlaid with a single eight-pointed star. Decorative molding outlines the front and sides of the lower case top. The lower case has two short side-by-side drawers over three taller side-by-side drawers. The center lower drawer has a gilded central arched recess with a scallop carving. The recess is echoed in the profile of the front skirt. Two drop finials on the front skirt follow the placement of the lower drawers. The sides of the lower case are each inlaid with a single eight-pointed star. Four cabriole legs support the lower case. The legs terminate in pad feet. The drawers of the upper and lower cases are treated similarly. The short, narrow drawer fronts have a central field of bookmatched mahogany veneer surrounded by two rows of stringing. Herringbone banding outlines the drawer fronts, each of which has a single bail pull on a solid bat-wing back plate. On the narrow drawer fronts with recessed shell carvings, the stringing follows the arches of the recesses. The full-width drawers have fields of bookmatched veneer, stringing, and banding applied to give the illusion of two side-by-side drawers. Each of the wide drawers has a central keyhole and two bail pulls on solid bat-wing back plates. All of the drawer openings are outlined in bead molding. According to the object record in the online catalog for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in the 1960s, close study and x-rays of the high chest revealed that the legs, finials, and brass hardware had been replaced and the gilding on the carved shells had been restored. Sometime between 1939 and 1965, the escutcheons covering the keyholes were replaced. According to Randall (1965), the brasses had been changed to a later style, and were replaced in 1939."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"12/4/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Inscriptions based on information supplied by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (1965).
