The maple veneer is enhanced with brown paint. The case top is made from a single board with overhanging edges at the front and sides. The top is screwed into the frame from below. There is a large, horizontal crack spanning width of case top through the veneer and top board. Uneven edges along the split indicate damage rather than board separation and excess glue visible on underside of case top suggests an attempted repair. The case frame is attached to the top with two dovetails in front and back and reinforced with glue. The case frame top has molding attached with nails on facing and sides. Applied half-round molding is decorated to resemble bamboo with smooth columnar turnings that have regular flared and incised rings enhanced by black paint. Molding along case top has mitered edges. The case top is veneered with figured maple. There are three drawer dividers with applied molding. Dividers are mortise and tenoned to the case sides. The case sides have a recessed center panel made from two vertical sections, framed by four rectangular panels and accented with applied mitered bamboo molding around center panel?ÇÖs periphery. On interior, there is a narrow groove with an even thinner strip of wood applied where the side framing panels join center section. At the case corners there are three-quarter columnar bamboo-turned stiles terminating in a foot. The side and back attachment to stile cannot be determined. The case back is made from two panels with three vertical stiles. These are screwed into case side frame on each side. The bottom drawer rests on the case frame and the drawer bottom acts as the case bottom. The frame is dovetailed to the case sides. There is also a spline joining the bottom frame and case sides. Bamboo-turned case molding runs along front and sides of case frame. With drawers removed, pins are visible along front interior framing element near bottom and second drawer opening on each side. (There are unfilled circular holes near left back interior corner, but at a different height. Other than to possibly attach the stile to case sides, the function of the pins, which do not appear on the companion piece, DAPC_2017-5022, is unclear.) The piece has two front and two back feet, all in the same style. The underlying shape is a snake foot, with two rows of carved half spheres on a textured background. The feet appear integral to the three-quarter columns on each corner of the piece and are separated from the bamboo style columns by two incised rings, painted black. The case has four veneered drawers with bamboo-turned molding running horizontally along drawer dividers. The top drawer is shorter in height than three lower drawers. Each drawer has bamboo-turned molding applied with nails running center portion of drawer and ending in small half-ball on either side. Each drawer has two wooden knobs, one on either side of applied molding, and keyhole with the original hardware at drawer center. There is a rabbet or ?Ç£L?Ç¥ shape protruding from the drawer bottom along the drawer front and sides. Drawers slide on runners along these extensions. The drawers rest on supports set into grooves in the case sides. The supports may be replaced, but there are visual signs of significant wear. Some of the supports nearly extend to case back, leaving a small gap while others touch the case back. There are drawer stops at the case back. The drawer sides are full height and, with the exception of the top drawer, the front top edges are faced. The bottoms of the second, third, and fourth drawers are each constructed with a center support board running from front to back flanking two side sections. The number of boards used for drawer bottom varies dramatically from a single board on one side for the bottom drawer to four boards per side on the second drawer. The drawer sides and backs are dovetailed (hand) and drawer sides and fronts are joined with half-blind dovetails. The drawer bottoms are let into grooves in the drawer fronts and sides and extend past the sides at the back to serve drawer stops. The grain of the drawer bottoms runs from side to side. The drawer bottoms are nailed to the drawer backs. The bottom edges of each drawer are chiseled to accommodate drawer stops on the drawer dividers. Although they show signs of wear, the drawer stops seem to be a later modification. On the bottom drawer, the drawer back is slightly shorter than sides. The top drawer is shorter and is constructed differently. The drawer back is shorter than the drawer sides. The drawer is fully veneered on the interior with figured maple and constructed from five boards. A raised, chamfered board runs from front to back, flanked by two horizontally stacked boards on either side. Like the other drawers, there is an ?Ç£L?Ç¥ cut along bottom at sides and front. The center vertically-running board slides into groove in drawer front and is rabbeted to sides. Veneer appears on both sides of dovetail, indicating it was applied to whole board prior to cutting the dovetails. Case and drawers include numerous graphite numbers and other marks related to construction. Vise marks (?)?Çöa pressed circular mark with raised center?Çöare also visible on drawer boards. There is insect damage to the bottom drawer boards. This chest of drawers includes a far greater variety of wood species than its companion piece, DAPC_2017-5022, which is exclusively maple. The secondary wood for DAPC_2017-5041 drawers (front, back, bottom), drawer dividers, case sides, top and framing is ring porous with very large pores. Although no rays are visible, the secondary wood exhibits visual characteristics of red oak, a possible attribution made based on wood samples. Drawer sides and case back panels are made from a diffuse porous hardwood, probably maple. Drawer runners and stops are made from a diffuse porous hardwood, possibly cherry. The framing elements of case top are an unidentified hardwood."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/25/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Graphite mark on underside of top drawer support near lock: [C] (see photo DAPC_2017-5041-008_mark_drawer_divider). Some of the city directory listings for John J. Vaughn & Co. state that the company manufactured furniture as well. It is possible, however, that Vaughn only retailed the set and that it was made elsewhere; the faux bamboo treatment is commonly associated with New York City. John J.
