The chair?ÇÖs profile is slightly curved, as is the crest rail, which is molded and features foliate at the center, carved from a solid, separate piece of wood and likely glued to the curved crest rail. The rear stiles are continuous with the back legs and join to the seat rail with a mortise and tenon joint. There are additional sections of abstracted foliate and scroll carving on the front sides of the stiles. Molded serpentine rear supports extend from the stiles to seat rails on both sides. Machine saw marks are visible along underside of supports and seat rails. Reproduction red needlepoint upholstery, with single band of decorative upholstery nails and upholstery trim, covers the spring seat and front and rear sides of the chair back. The upholstery materials are likely replaced and obscured by a later dust cloth, which includes upholsterer?ÇÖs label. The chair has carved and molded block legs in front with simpler, slightly-curved block legs in the rear. The front and back legs are mortise and tenoned to the seat rail. The front legs have V-shaped carving and molding along the edges. The front legs terminate in a carved center lobe with two horizontal incisions above castors. Castors are present on the front legs only. Repairs of varying quality are visible, particularly along front seat rail and on the left leg. The anatomical structure of the wood suggests a diffuse porous hardwood such as mahogany, but the overall quality of carving and construction suggests the use of a less expensive wood."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/26/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"None found"},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"The primary wood is a diffuse porous hardwood suggestive of mahogany.
