The back of the chair is square with a curved profile. The crest rail is straight, with curved shoulders, and decoratively scalloped ears. There is a single, horizontal slat, square with the rear stiles; the stiles are continuous with the back legs. The left stile has been repaired near the joint where the slat is tenoned into the stile, and there is evidence of a repaired crack on the right side of the crest. The forward-facing surfaces of the crest and slat are veneered.  The seat is trapezoidal, and framed using mortise-and-tenon joints. It is unclear if the rush seat is a reproduction or original. The seat is attached to the frame with two screws, one on both the front and back rails, in centered pockets on the underside of the frame. There are corner blocks screwed into the rail on the underside of the seat. There are four additional, visible, corner blocks within the frame of the seating surface itself; they appear to be nailed to the rail from underneath, with the rush woven around them. The exterior surface of the back rail was once veneered, but the veneer has been lost. All four legs are sabre shaped, and attached to the seat rail with mortise-and-tenon joints.  Multiple layers of varnish are visible, applied unevenly over time. The veneers, as well as the solid stiles, legs, and left, right, and front rails are made from a tropical, porous hardwood, identified as mahogany upon examination. The secondary wood, used for the veneered back rail, interior corner blocks supporting the seat, and the visible corner blocks of the seating surface, is a ring porous hardwood, identified as white
