Hickling. / BOSTON.], likely refers to Captain William Hickling (1742-1790) of Boston. Hickling is said to have played a role in major events of colonial history leading up to the Revolutionary War, most prominently including the Boston Tea Party. After Captain Hickling's death in 1790, his widow Elizabeth (1740-1827) moved to Duxbury, Massachusetts, to live with their daughter Sarah, wife of Captain Gershom Bradford. Elizabeth Hickling likely brought the chest with her and it descended in the Bradford family. This chest may be the \"trunk\" Elizabeth left to Sarah according to an 1826 document (see DAPC_2015-5069). In 1968, the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society acquired the house built by Gershom and Sarah Bradford in 1808 along with its contents."},{"label":"Dimensions","value":"Height 14.25 in. The chest lid is composed of a single board with overhanging edges on the sides. The lid terminates in integral double bead moldings at the sides and an integral quarter round molding at the front. It is attached to the chest back with two decorative iron strap hinges visible on the underside of the lid and at the back. The hinges taper from the bottom to the center of the lid with rounded elements at the ends. The interior of the chest is open, but L-shaped grooves cut into the top left and right corners of the chest front and back suggest that the chest once had compartments on either end. Corresponding semi-circular grooves are visible on the underside of the lid. There is heavy water staining on the right side of the interior bottom board. The case sides are each constructed of one board with square edges, flanked by six large, exposed dovetails. Each side has a rectangular strip nailed at the top corresponding with the overhanging edge of the lid. Both strips are beveled at the front. A vertical handle is attached on either side with curved ends culminating in a flat center segment, all edges chamfered. The handles have a small hole at the center through which a knotted rope is tied. On the right side of the case, there is a rectangular shadow and four bolts adjacent to the handle, evincing the possible presence of a plaque at some point. A rectangular hole in the case front suggests that the chest also once had a lock. The case back and front are each composed of a single board that is nailed into the bottom board. The case sides are nailed into the bottom through either side.  The exterior of the chest lid is painted dark blue while all other exterior surfaces of the chest, excluding the bottom painted light blue. Much of the original paint remains, with paint loss predominating at the lower front of the chest. A white inscription is painted on the chest front. It reads: [W. Hickling. / BOSTON.].
