(61 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Gothic Revival oak teacher's desk manufactured by Joseph L. Ross, a prominent school furniture maker in Boston. The desk is constructed of two integral units - a slant topped desk well and a drawer box.    A gallery surmounts the top at the rear and the right side and is attached to the sides with screws. The right side of the gallery covers approximately half of the side, and is cut with an interrupted cyma curve. The gallery is joined at the rear corner with a miter joint, reinforced with a machine cut sliding dovetail spline visible at the top.    The top of the desk well consists of a broad slant lid attached with a pair of butt hinges to a narrow fixed panel at the rear. The lid has an integral thumbnail molding on the front. The lid is constructed of an oak frame surrounding a tulip poplar panel at the front and sides. A strip of oak is applied to the exterior top of the panel along the hinged edge to simulate a rail at the rear. The exterior of the central panel is covered in painted black textile.    The top of the rear of the desk well is formed by the rear panel of the gallery. A partial depth single shelf is set into a dado on the right and left sides; the shelf is split and only a partial piece remains. A lock is mortised into the front panel of the desk well. The sides of the desk well are joined with a miter joint reinforced with a machine cut sliding dovetail spline.    The bottom of the desk well is glued into a rabbet on the left side, and attached with glue blocks and nails to the side of the drawer box.    The tops of the left front and rear legs are notched to accept the corners the apron. A single panel, flush with the desk well side, forms an apron on the left side and at the rear and is attached to the front and rear left legs with screws. An arched apron connects the left legs leg to the right side of the drawer box.    An applied half round molding surrounds the desk well at the front, side and rear. The molding is set flush with the drawer box top and is mitered at the left front and left rear corners.    On the right-hand side of the desk the top of the drawer box is made of three butt-joined oak panels with the grain running from side to side. The outside edges are molded in a half-round. The top panels are attached to the sides with screws in pockets. The sides of the drawer box are made of two butt-joined boards with grain running horizontally, joined to the legs with screws. The back of the drawer box is a single panel with grain running horizontally.    The right side of the desk well box is screwed to the left side of the drawer box.    The legs have ring and ball turnings at the top, and at the bottom a bulb shaped turning over a flattened bun with an integral disk foot.    The drawers have solid oak fronts with full height sides, attached at the front and back with a miter joint reinforced by a machine cut sliding dovetail spline. The drawer bottoms are let into a groove in the front and sides and are not attached to the drawer back. The drawers are side hung, resting on original runners glued and nailed to the drawer box sides. The top front rail is attached with a rabbet. The central divider is attached with a mortise and tenon. The lower divider is attached to the left drawer box side with a dovetail joint. Two stop blocks were originally nailed to the top of each drawer divider. Only part of one remains on the interior of the top divider.    The iron drawers pulls appear to be original to the piece and are embossed with a fleur de lis at the top front and sides.
