(63.5 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"William and Mary-style cane armchair. The chair has a square, flat back that is angled slightly backward. The straight crest rail is carved with a symmetrical design: two cherubs hold a stylized vegetal form amid scrolling leaves. There is punchwork in the negative space of the relief. The crest rail is tenoned into blocks on the rear stiles; shallow floral motifs are carved on the fronts of the blocks. A horizontal slat, carved with flowers and scrolling leaves, is tenoned into the rear stiles just below the arms. A caned splat is set between the crest rail and the horizontal slat. The back surface of the splat is chamfered, and the front surface is carved with scrolling leaves on either side of the central cane panel.  The rear stiles are topped with ring-turned ball finials, also ornamented with carved leaves. The stiles, each barley-turned from a single piece of wood, are joined to the seat rail and continuous with the back legs. Carved arms terminate in scrolled handholds, each adorned with a carved acanthus leaf. The arms are tenoned into the rear stiles with visible pins. The arm supports are continuous with the front legs.  The trapezoidal, cane seat is framed with mortise-and-tenon joints; pins are visible on the front and rear stiles. Foliate carving and relief punchwork decorate the frame on both the top and side surfaces. The armchair has been re-caned. There are irregularly spaced holes along the top edge of the frame?ÇÖs exterior surfaces, suggesting that, at one point, the chair was upholstered over the rail. The holes are both round and square, and vary in size. Some of the nail pins remain embedded in the wood. Mill sawing marks are visible underneath the seat rails. The back rail appears to be a different type of wood than the other three rails, possibly oak.  The chair has four baluster legs. The barley-turned stretchers are arranged in an H-pattern, and joined to the legs with visible pins. An elaborate carved stretcher between the two front legs echoes the design of the carved slat. The front feet are Spanish, carved to resemble a stylized hoof with a wooly leg.
