The commode is constructed with a double lifting top configuration that conceals the function when closed. The upper lifting top is composed of one solid mahogany board hinged with two butt hinges to a fixed board at the rear. The fixed board is notched along the right and left edges to allow carved gallery sides to sit on top. The gallery sides slope downward from back to front with a serpentine profile and the top edges have integral quarter-round molding. The gallery also spans the back edge of the fixed board with a straight board that extends about 1 in. (2.5 cm) above the fixed top and has integral quarter-rounded molding along the top edge.  The sides of the commode are each constructed with two solid boards framed at the front and rear by vertical stiles, and with a horizontal stile across the top and a concave arched stile connecting the front stile to the top. The sides of the stiles are flat and the top edges of the horizontal and arched stiles are quarter-round. The case sides are connected to the stiles with mortise and tenon joints. A brass bail pull is mounted in the center of each side near the top.  The front of the commode case is a solid board with two full-width false drawer fronts. The drawer fronts are outlined with bead molding and each has two bail pulls with hexagonal decorative brass mounts. The case front is mortise and tenoned into the front vertical stiles and there is a line of bead molding across the bottom edge that continues across the stiles.  Immediately above the case front, the lower lifting top opens to reveal the commode interior. The lift top is one solid board with cock-bead molding across the front edge and it is hinged to a fixed board at the rear with two butt hinges. The upper lift top must be open in order for the lower lift top to open fully. When they are both open, the upper top rests against the gallery and the lower top rests against the upper top. The interior of the case is fitted with two pine boards, one on top of the other, with a circular cutout in the center of each for a white ceramic chamber pot. The lower pine board is fixed to mahogany supports which run along the sides and are nailed to the case sides from underneath. The upper pine board is removable and rests on top of the lower board. The chamber pot has a lip around the top edge that allows it to sit suspended by the lower pine board and be removed when the upper board is taken out.  The commode is supported by four therm legs which are continuous with the front and rear vertical stiles. The front left leg has been repaired with a vertical wooden brace screwed to the back where it meets the case.
