The case went to trial in March 1986 and was settled several days later, with confidential terms. The case alleged that the six pieces were substantially not as described; for this piece in particular, that the table was not in its original condition from the eighteenth century. Per Dean Failey of Christie's, the expert witness at the trial, the problems indicating the table's inauthenticity are as follows: screw holes on the underside of the top, clearly old, which do not connect to anything; lack of signs of aging on the veneered surfaces (the veneer was not dry, brittle, or cracking, and there were no repairs at all); overall, very little indication of repairs or glue work; and the open pores of the wood grain were still visible, whereas they should have been filled in (closed up) by accumulated grime and residue from use over time.  Per Benno Forman in 1974, the thickness of the legs and the length of the plinths indicate a second-rate Boston or Charlestown region craftsman."},{"label":"Subjects (AAT)","value":["Dressing tables","Low chests"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Dressing tables"]},{"label":"Bibliography","value":"Court case: Cornelius v. All the finishing details (top, veneer, escutcheons and pulls, pendants, etc.) are modern additions; the carcass is possibly actually from the eighteenth century. The rectangular top features a slate center in a broad wooden frame with quarter-round molded edges. The case has a row of two drawers over a row of three drawers; the drawer openings are framed with cock-bead molding. The upper drawers have veneered rectangular panels edged by herringbone banding and bail pulls on engraved keyhole surrounds. The outer lower drawers have veneered rectangular panels edged by herringbone banding and bail pulls on engraved escutcheons. The center drawer is inset blocked, ending with an arched top; the drawer is veneered and bordered by herringbone banding; inlaid rays radiate from the small round knob at center to the edge of the blocking, creating a fan effect. The skirt is flat arched and has turned acorn drops on plinths with cock-bead molding at the bottom. The cabriole legs have scrolled knee brackets and club or pad feet."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/20/2018"},{"label":"Materials","value":"Walnut; Pine; Unidentified wood; Slate; Unidentified metal"},{"label":"Style","value":["Queen Anne"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range provided by DAPC staff, 1976."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1730 - D:00 M:00 Y:1750"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Place of origin identified as Boston or Charlestown area by Benno Forman, 1974."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Boston, Massachusetts; Charlestown, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Other Name","value":"Dressing bureau; Toilet table; Vanity; Lowboy; Low chest of drawers"},{"label":"Object Type","value":["Table"]},{"label":"Object Use","value":"Support furniture"},{"label":"Category","value":"Furniture"},{"label":"Title","value":"Dressing table"},{"label":"Date Modified","value":"7/20/2018"}],"description":"Dressing table","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c9b2b028-b48a-42ae-8066-92f5e5501926/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_1975-1140-001_whole","height":1311,"width":1500,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/dedfeb14-eec0-4d4b-a499-fc836fa7a3ed/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/dedfeb14-eec0-4d4b-a499-fc836fa7a3ed","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1311,"width":1500},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c9b2b028-b48a-42ae-8066-92f5e5501926/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/dedfeb14-eec0-4d4b-a499-fc836fa7a3ed/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c9b2b028-b48a-42ae-8066-92f5e5501926/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_1975-1140-002_top","height":775,"width":1500,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/95e0aa79-8893-49fe-9eac-290e62a3a677/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/95e0aa79-8893-49fe-9eac-290e62a3a677","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":775,"width":1500},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c9b2b028-b48a-42ae-8066-92f5e5501926/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/95e0aa79-8893-49fe-9eac-290e62a3a677/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c9b2b028-b48a-42ae-8066-92f5e5501926/canvas/_3","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_1975-1140-003_shell","height":776,"width":1500,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/630a3d95-8453-48cf-81ce-1dca5c692bfb/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/630a3d95-8453-48cf-81ce-1dca5c692bfb","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":776,"width":1500},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c9b2b028-b48a-42ae-8066-92f5e5501926/canvas/_3","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/630a3d95-8453-48cf-81ce-1dca5c692bfb/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/dedfeb14-eec0-4d4b-a499-fc836fa7a3ed/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/logo"}
