Upper case: Surmounting the upper case is a broken and scrolled pediment. Three urn-and-flame finials are posted along the top: two at the front corners mounted to plinths and one central, flanked by the cove-molded arc segments constituting the pediment and mounted to a curved plinth. Decorative cornice molding is applied along the front and sides above the paneled doors. Flanking the doors are reeded pilasters with Corinthian capitals and beveled bases. The wood paneling on the doors are scalloped and have decorated edges. Visible on the right door is a keyhole, but markings around the keyhole suggest an escutcheon is missing. Under the doors are two sliding candlestands. On the case sides are bat-wing escutcheons and bail pulls. Lower case: The lower case is bomb?? and slant-front with a hinged lid that, at top, has a bat-wing escutcheon with a keyhole and a locking mechanism, and four graduated drawers. On the sides are bat-wing escutcheons and bail pulls. When the hinged lid is open, visible inside are eight pigeonholes (four on each side of the central prospect unit) with ogee valances. The pigeonholes are above eight drawers (four on each side of the central prospect unit, stacked two by two). Each drawer has a knob and while the four inner drawers are straight-front, the outer four drawers are s-curved. The central prospect unit is flanked by pilasters with smooth shafts and Doric capitals, above which are relief carvings of urn-and-flame finials, and mounts. The door of the central prospect unit has a wood panel with ogee-curved edges. The four drawers in the lower case each have two batwing bail pulls flanking a central batwing escutcheon with a keyhole, and they are all have bead molding around the edges. The top drawer is set within knobbed lopers. The base molding is beveled. Along the apron is a central drop of a carved shell with volutes. The bracket feet have relief carvings in a classical motif. Maker's name is engraved on brass keyplate, part of the locking mechanism on the upper case. Before 1935, the drawer linings of the lower case were reconditioned. Between 1935 and 1938, the desk and bookcase went under a drastic renovation, as evidenced in pictures from auction catalogs. The upper case (while mostly similar in design to the current state) was elongated. The former look of the upper case made the desk and bookcase disproportionate. Pre-restoration, the doors had two clear glass panels, as did the door of the central prospect unit inside the lower case; the glass was replaced by wood panels. The legs were once cabriole and the bracket feet were claw-and-ball feet, but during restoration the claw-and-ball parts were removed (leaving what remained of the original legs and feet intact) and platforms were added to refine the new feet."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"1/19/2019"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Engraved on locking mechanism on upper case: [J: McMILLIAN] : text worn and illegible : [/ MAKER] : text worn and illegible : [BOS]."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Mahogany; Unidentified wood; Brass"},{"label":"Style","value":["Chippendale"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range of 1749-1769 provided by Vincent (1974).
