The chair back is composed of three flat vertical turned stiles at the corners, with flat angled pierced slats between them. A horseshoe shaped arm rail attaches to the stiles with round mortise and tenons; the arm rail has handholds with a subtle scroll shape and an applied, molded crest following the curve of the back portion. A slim wedge is inserted into the arm rail at the center back. The two splats of the chair back are mounted into a groove in the arm rail at the top, and a groove in a molded board at the bottom. This molded board rests on the upper edge of the seat rail, and an additional supporting rail applied to the inner top face of the seat rail. The splats, particularly the left splat, have numerous breaks and repairs; the molded board at the base of the left splat has also been broken and repaired. The splats are upside down relative to the expected orientation of this type of splat, possibly due to having been removed for repairs.    The seat is square, with an upholstered removable slip seat. The slip seat frame is likely original, as the mark on the slip seat matches the mark on the seat rail, but the numerous tack holes indicate that it has been reupholstered multiple times. The current upholstery is a needlepoint seat cover with geometric patterns in red, green, yellow, black, and white; the underside of the seat has interwoven webbing supporting straw stuffing. The webbing is in poor condition and the stuffing has begun to spill out. The joinery of the slip seat is obscured by the upholstery.    The seat frame is composed of a tall board on each side of the chair, attached to the legs with mortise and tenons and reinforced by two chamfered glue blocks, close to the full height of the seat frame, applied to the inside of each corner. Each seat rail is carved along the bottom to create a skirt, with two s-curves framing a central drop. The front left and front right seat rails have a rabbet cut at the top, with a rounded outer edge; the slip seat rests on the inside of the rabbet. The back left and right seat rails have an additional applied strip nailed in place to support the slip seat.    The legs of the chair are block shaped with the corners rounded and tapered down as they approach the foot. The back and side legs are continuous with the back stiles of the chair. They are attached by mortise and tenon to the seat rails. The feet are simple ball and claw carved, with a somewhat flattened ball. The feet are continuous with the legs. The wood appears dark, but this seems to be due to a stain or wash rather than the natural coloration of the wood. The manufacturer may have intended to disguise the wood as mahogany. The seat cover embroidery seems to be wool, based on the texture.
