(60.9 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"This Eastlake-style chest of drawers with looking glass consists of two five-sided chests of drawers separated by a tall looking glass over a panel base. Each chest of drawers has four vertically stacked drawers with locks and drawer pulls. The components of the piece feature surfaces veneered with figured maple and turned columnar moldings decorated to resemble bamboo with regular flared and incised rings enhanced by black paint. Short bamboo-style galleries visually connect the tops of the chests with the sides of the looking glass. There is an additional bamboo-style gallery across the top of the looking glass.  Left-hand chest of drawers: The sides of the chest form an irregular pentagon, shaped as a rectangular chest abutting a triangle-shaped unit immediately adjacent to the looking glass. The two short, continuous sides of the triangle creating an approximate right angle: one side is parallel to the looking glass and one is perpendicular to the looking glass. The three remaining contiguous sides of the rectangular case are each longer and form the chest front with drawer openings, exterior side, and back opposite the drawer openings. The case top overhangs at the front and on three sides and is flush on the side parallel to the looking glass; the partial gallery is screwed to the top edge of this parallel side. Bamboo-style molding is nailed to the overhanging edges. Though not visible, the case top is likely tenoned into a supporting frame which is dovetailed in to the case sides. The case sides are made with recessed panel construction with splines connecting the horizontal and vertical elements. The left case side features extra strips of wood fitted between the horizontal and vertical framework and the central panel. An additional panel-framed unit, only visible from the interior of the case when the drawers are removed, is parallel to the left case side and supports the drawers on the right-hand side of the case. This unit forms the long side of an interior, triangular hollow space. The two right-most sides of the case, which form the right angle, define the other sides of the hollow. The interior of the hollow is not visible from the exterior, nor is it accessible from within the chest. Each side of the chest, except the side parallel to the looking glass, is trimmed with bamboo molding around the recessed panels and the bottom edge of the case. The squared front edges are veneered. The side parallel to the looking glass is constructed from one recessed board that is screwed into the adjacent side panels. A brace for the looking glass extends across the length of this surface; there is an additional board beneath the brace that brings it flush with the case sides. The case bottom is composed of a four-board frame that is integral to the case and overhangs at the front and sides. The frame is dovetailed into the case sides and then the frame itself is tenoned together. The hollow does not have a covered bottom but the construction of the case bottom is not visible. The chest of drawers has four feet. The front three feet are continuous and feature a modified snake foot with two rows decorative raised small semi-spheres. The rear foot, which is connected to the looking glass, is slightly flared with bamboo turnings.  Right-hand chest of drawers: The right-hand chest of drawers is a mirror image of the left with the same construction details.  Drawers: Each chest of drawers has four drawers stacked vertically. The drawers are rest on drawer supports attached to the case side and interior panel-framed unit. Some of the supports extend to the back of the case while others do not. There are some drawer stops at the back of the case for the left side chest of drawers; the right side has stops for each drawer at the back of the case. Both the drawer supports and the drawer dividers have grooves that run the length of the board. Abutting drawer supports and drawer dividers are then connected by a spline set into these grooves. The drawer dividers on the right side chest of drawers do not feature the full length groove, but are still splined to the drawer supports which are grooved. The drawer sides are full height with flat top edges. The drawer backs are slightly lower than the sides with rounded top edges. The drawer bottoms are each made from one board that extends beyond the sides to serve as a drawer stop. The bottoms are let into grooves at the case sides and fronts and nailed to the undersides of the backs. The sides and backs are joined with dovetails. The sides and fronts are joined with half-blind dovetails. The drawer fronts are solid wood with horizontal figured maple veneer. The drawer fronts do not extend past the drawer sides. All of the drawer fronts have locks and wooden drawer pulls. There are two keys for the dresser. The drawers and the drawer dividers each have an applied strip of bamboo molding across the center.  The looking glass is original to the dresser and likely has its original glass. The back board of the looking glass is composed of a three panel framed construction that is mortise and tenoned together. Only the bottom panel is chamfered. The back of the looking glass is attached to the two chests of drawers by a long brace that extends across length of the dresser. The brace is screwed on. The looking glass is framed by turned bamboo moldings that are screwed into place. The top corners of the frame are rounded. At the base of the glass is a decorative double recessed panel with figured maple veneer and bamboo molding that outlines the panels. Dowels attach this bottom double panel portion to the case sides of both chests of drawers. This double panel section is constructed with mortise and tenons and extends from the top to the bottom of the chest of drawers. The glass does not tilt or move. A bamboo-style gallery is attached to the top edge of the looking glass. Vaughn, who advertised primarily as an upholsterer. Vaughn was active in Boston from about 1862-about 1874. City directories identify him as an upholsterer employed by Henry A. Turner or Henry A. Turner & Co. from 1862-1867. He is listed under his own name from 1868-1869 and under John J. Vaughn & Co. from 1870-1873. In 1872 and 1873, Charles J. Blaney is listed as a partner in the firm. Some of the city directory listings for John J. Vaughn & Co. state that the company manufactured furniture as well. It is possible, however, that Vaughn only retailed the set and that it was made elsewhere; the faux bamboo treatment is commonly associated with New York City.  John J. Vaughn relocated to Haverhill, Massachusetts, sometime between 1874 and 1876. An 1877 Haverhill newspaper includes an advertisement for J. J. Vaughn, Interior and Exterior Decorator.
