(54 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"A William and Mary-style japanned dressing table constructed of white pine, cherry, and soft maple. The rectangular top overhangs the sides and has a quarter-round molded edge. The case has three drawers in a row; the center drawer is half the height of the side drawers. The drawer openings are surrounded by half-round molding. Each drawer has a bail pull on an escutcheon engraved with a floral motif. The skirt is serpentine arched; cock-bead molding borders the case where it meets the legs and at the flattened bottom points of the skirt arches. The legs are trumpet and ball turned with bun feet; the X-shaped stretchers have serpentine arms.  The table is japanned with a black ground. The top has a detailed hunting scene in a floral and geometric border; the molding around the top has a geometric pattern. The sides of the case have a floral design. The sides drawers each have a hut and tree; the center drawer has a landscape. The front skirt has foliate designs, with a pair of figures (too worn to identify) flanking the center arch of the skirt. The trumpet turnings have japanned foliage, the ring turnings are colored solid gold, and the ball turnings, including the feet, have floral decoration. The tops of the stretchers are also decorated.  The two-piece top is painted white on the underside and is secured to the case with pins. Pine strips glued around the top of the case once helped support the top, but have shrunk away from it. The white pine back is dovetailed to the cherry sides. All four case corners are reinforced by white pine blocks, into which the legs are doweled. The cherry front skirt is tenoned into the front blocks. The drawers have soft maple fronts and are otherwise of white pine; the bottoms are nailed into place, with pine runners glued on. The drawers are divided by white pine partitions, which are nailed to the front and tenoned to the back. The drawer supports are nailed to the partitions; there are no drawer supports on the case sides. Pine blocks are applied behind the skirt as if to support pendants, but the plinths are solid. The cherry stretchers are lapped together at the center. The feet are doweled to the legs. The paint was originally applied directly to the wood.  The table underwent conservation in 1976: It was cleaned of wax and grime, leaving the paint layer untouched, then coated with an acryloid resin.
