The upper case has a broken scroll pediment outlined with wide serpentine molding. Urn and corkscrew finials are mounted on top of rectangular plinths at the front corners and on a shaped plinth that rises from the center front of the pediment. The case has arched paneled doors framed by fluted pilasters with Corinthian capitals on each side and in the center. Two sliding candlestands extend from beneath the center of each door. Each candlestand is fitted with a single brass knob. The lower case has a fall lid that opens up into a flat surface on which to write. The desk interior has a central prospect unit consisting of a solid door with an inset arch that mirrors the proportions of the bookcase doors. The prospect door is flanked by document drawers with applied half turnings. On either side of the central prospect unit are four pigeonholes with serpentine valences and dividers surmounting two side-by-side drawers surmounting a single wide drawer. The narrow drawers each have a single pull; the wide drawers each have two. Below the desk surface, the case is bomb?? shaped. The case has four graduated drawers. The uppermost drawer is flanked by lopers, each of which has a single knob. The drawers each have a shaped escutcheon and two bail pulls with back plates of the same design as the escutcheons. The drawer openings have bead molding along the edges. There is complex molding along the side and front lower edges of the case and a shaped center drop. The case resets on squared, molded feet that flare toward the bottom. Photos of the piece taken in 1971 show urn and corkscrew finials; as of 2018, the piece has flame and urn finials of a different design. The 1971 photos show the ghosting of molding applied to the sides of the lower case just below the top drawer. As of 2018, the molding has been restored."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/20/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Signed on back of the top drawer: [Do D Sprage Benj.
