The sloping rectangular lid is connected by a hinge to a narrow horizontal fixed panel at the rear. The lid is made up of three boards with grain running from side to side, the boards joined by a machine cut tongue and groove joint visible at the edges. The fixed panel has a full width pencil cover, a raised molding set glued into a rabbet, and an inkwell hole that measures 1 7/8 inches in diameter on the right side. The fixed panel is attached to the case back with flat head screws inset into machine cut pockets on the interior of the back board. A pair of "T"- shaped hollow metal stabilizing rods are inset into a "T" shaped rabbet cut into the underside of the case top running from front to rear and secured in place with nails. The top overhangs the front and sides. The lid hinge is circular and has a stamp [Kenney Bros & Wolkins, Boston. Pat Appld For]. A full width, white oak, cove cut pencil tray is attached to the interior of the case front with wooden pins. The case front is a single rectangular board, with grain running horizontally, and canted outward. The front is joined to the case sides with a miter-cut floating spline joint. The case sides are single boards with grain running horizontally. The case back is a single board with grain running horizontally, joined to the sides with a miter joint. The case bottom is two boards with grain running horizontally. The bottom is set into rabbets at the side, front and back.    The trestle legs are made of two separate "L" shaped castings, the upper casting fits within the lower casting. The height is adjusted and secured by a stove bolt with integral square washer that passes through from the inside of the upper casting, to the outside of the lower casting. The bolt is capped with a hexagonal nut and washer. The upper casting has a flat rail that attaches to the case bottom with flat head screws at the front and rear. The upper casting is embossed with a [1 L] at the top, and series of equally spaced, horizontal graduated lines set into a debossed cartouche. Some of the spaces between the lines have numbers embossed, starting with [4] at the top, followed by [3] two lines lower, and likely descending down to 0 at the bottom, although the lower numbers are not currently visible. The upper leg casting is stabilized with a curved bracket that runs from the middle of the leg front to the front of the upper rail. The lower leg has two integral flat oval disks that form feet. Each foot has two screw holes for securing the desk to the floor, currently attached to wooden skids. The name of the manufacturer "Kenney Bros & Wolkins, Boston Mass." is embossed on the cast integral lower stretcher. "L1 & 2" is embossed on a cross brace on the middle of the lower casting.
