Forman (1988) believes the baluster side stretchers on this chair indicate it was probably made to accompany an easy chair, because side stretchers of most Boston Queen-Anne side chairs shifted to the columnar turnings by the mid 1730s, while those on easy chairs retained the balusters. The crest has a backward-scrolling, flattened arch at the center and squared ears. The lower edge of the back has a serpentine profile. The back is fully upholstered with the rear stiles visible only beneath the double ogee. The trapezoidal seat is upholstered over the rail. The front cabriole legs have distinct edges outlined in bead molding and terminate in squared, modified trifid feet. The rear stump legs appear to be continuous with the rear stiles. Baluster-turned side stretchers, a double-ring-and-reel-turned medial stretcher, and spindle-shaped rear stretcher support the legs."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"2/27/2019"},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library identifies the primary wood used as soft maple and birch and cherry secondary wood based on microanalysis performed around 2005."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Maple; Birch; Wool textile; Upholstery materials"},{"label":"Style","value":["Queen Anne","William and Mary"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Dated by DAPC staff (1988)."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1730 - D:00 M:00 Y:1740"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Place of origin determined by Brock Jobe (2015)."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Vicinity of Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Other Name","value":"Occasional chair"},{"label":"Object Type","value":["Chair"]},{"label":"Object Use","value":"Seating furniture"},{"label":"Category","value":"Furniture"},{"label":"Title","value":"Side chair"},{"label":"Date Modified","value":"2/27/2019"}],"description":"Side chair","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c0f4d0a8-2a1f-4b53-857d-82554bbac13a/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Side chair","height":1500,"width":924,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c0f4d0a8-2a1f-4b53-857d-82554bbac13a/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c0f4d0a8-2a1f-4b53-857d-82554bbac13a","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1500,"width":924},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c0f4d0a8-2a1f-4b53-857d-82554bbac13a/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c0f4d0a8-2a1f-4b53-857d-82554bbac13a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/c0f4d0a8-2a1f-4b53-857d-82554bbac13a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/logo"}
