Surmounting the hood is a fretwork gallery with a urn-and-spire brass finials mounted to fluted plinths at the center front and each front corner of the hood. Blind fretwork decorates the tympanum. The arched hood has quarter-round molding and a conforming glass door with a veneered frame, outlined in double-string inlay. The left side of the door has a locking mechanism and a shaped keyhole. The sides of the hood have arched sidelights. Flanking the door are free-standing fluted columns with brass capitals and mounts. At the rear vertical edges of the hood are engaged smooth columns, also with brass capitals and mounts. Opening the door reveals the white enameled dial, which has Roman and Arabic numerals and decorative hour and minute hands. Within the chapter ring is a seconds dial. Flanking a calendar aperture are winding holes. The dial is inscribed: [Wm Cummens]. Flowers are painted in the spandrels. In the lunette is a hemisphere and a moon phase, which also has a painting of a religious figure in front of a crucifix. Cove molding outlines the front and side edges of the trunk where it meets the hood and the base. Engaged, fluted quarter columns with brass capitals and mounts flank three-quarters of the trunk door. The rectangular door is outlined in stringing and checkered inlay with light and dark wood fans inlaid at the corners. The front of the base is outlined in stringing and checkered inlay with light and dark wood fans inlaid at the corners. Stepped molding outlines the lower front and side edges of the base. The case rests on compressed block feet. The small size of the finials indicates that they are likely replacements."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"10/17/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Inscribed on dial: [Wm Cummens]."},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"Mahogany identified as the primary wood by Baltimore Museum of Art (1968)."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Mahogany; Gilding; Brass; Paint; Glass; Enamel"},{"label":"Style","value":["Federal"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range of 1790-1810 provided by the Baltimore Museum of Art, 1968.
