The bulk of the manuscript is devoted to recounting Gracie's journey to Scotland and England, commencing on September 1, 1815. The travel account offers a description of historic sites, hotels, people met, theater, and scenery. He reports on visits to factories (including the Herculaneum Pottery) and craftsmen, describing the production of household objects in the early years of the Industrial Revolution. Gracie was particularly fascinated with the use of steam power, visiting a place where tambour work was done by steam power, a cotton manufactory, a calico printing house, and a tape manufactory, witnessed iron being recast, and saw a demonstration of glassblowing./nGracie, Jr., a cotton exporter, was the son of the noted Archibald Gracie who emigrated from his native Scotland and settled in New York City, where he became a successful shipping magnate. Gracie, Jr., born December 17, 1795, married Elizabeth David Bethune in 1825 and settled in New Jersey. Their children were Archibald III, Esther, James K., Charles K., Margaret, and Elizabeth. He died on April 11, 1864./nIn 1888, Gracie's son, James K., retraced his father's journey in Dumfries and on pp. 98-103 also made comments.
