Molding around the top overhangs the upper case front and sides. Just below the top molding is arcaded molding. The front of the upper case consists of four narrow boards forming an outer frame. A textile panel is mounted in the frame. The textile is ruched and secured at the center with a floral button, creating a sunburst affect. Below the upper case, a two-part hinged lid opens to reveal the keyboard. A brass plaque mounted to the outside of the lid is engraved with the maker's name. There is bead-and-reel molding around side and front edges of the frame surrounding the keyboard. The lower case has a panel of textile punctuated at center with a floral button and framed in checkered inlay. The two cabriole legs are mounted in front of the lower case to support the keyboard. The legs are carved with acanthus leaves down the front with volutes on the sides. The feet are paw with defined knuckles. The base also holds the two pedals."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"10/9/2018"},{"label":"Materials","value":"Unidentified wood; Unidentified metal; Unidentified textile; Brass"},{"label":"Style","value":["Empire"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"According to Helen Rice Hollis, in \"Jonas Chickering: 'The Father of American Pianoforte-making,'\" (Antiques August 1973), pg. 229, this 1830 instrument is the first upright piano Chickering made."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1830"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Chickering was active as a pianomaker in Boston from 1815-1853."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Basis of Maker Attribution","value":"Labeled by maker.
