The desk is constructed in two sections: a lower case with drawers, and an upper desk section which overhangs the lower case.  The top of the desk section has a rectangular flat surface at the rear, likely constructed from a single board and veneered with figured maple. The sides and back have half round moldings nailed to the edges over strips of veneer, turned to resemble bamboo, with regular flared and incised rings enhanced by black paint. A gallery, constructed with bamboo style turnings, extends across the back and sides of the flat rectangular top. The gallery components are attached with round mortise and tenon to half round bamboo style turnings nailed to the top surface. A column at each corner, and a larger column at the center back, terminate in a taper and small ball finial. Horizontal spindles connect the corner columns to the center column, with three small vertical spindles on each side connecting the horizontal spindles to the half round turnings. Decorative brackets connect the center column to the horizontal spindles on each side, consisting of one vertical and one horizontal spindle. The horizontal spindles of the bracket terminate in a taper and small ball. Along the sides, the gallery consists of horizontal spindles connected to the corner columns and curving downwards to meet the half round turnings. One small vertical spindle connects the middle of each of the horizontal spindles to the half round turnings. There are two clearly visible breaks in the gallery.  The forward section of the top consists of a larger slanted rectangular lid, with two butt hinges connected to the rear flat section about two inches in from the sides to allow it to lift up. The lid is panel framed; the exterior of the panel is covered by a dark red textile writing surface bordered by a strip of darker material, possibly leather. The exterior and interior of the frame elements, and the interior of the panel, are covered by figured maple veneers. The overhanging side and front edges of the lid are decorated with half round bamboo style moldings, nailed in place over strips of veneer.  The sides of the upper case are modified horizontal rectangles, with the upper edge following the flat into slanted profile of the desk?ÇÖs top sections. The case sides are covered by figured maple veneers. The lower edge has an applied half-round bamboo style molding. The front and back corners have bamboo style three quarter columns. The front columns extend below the bottom edge into a taper and small ball drop.  The back and front of the upper case are also covered by figured maple veneers, and have applied half-round bamboo style moldings along the bottom edges.  The bottom of the upper case consists of one or possibly two boards. The wood is a ring porous hardwood, possibly chestnut or oak. The bottom is screwed into rabbets in the case sides, back, and front, with the screws visible from the underside. The bottom of the upper case is also attached to the lower case with glue blocks. Decorative brackets, consisting of one vertical and one horizontal bamboo style turned spindle, attach to the underside of the upper case bottom and to the front corner columns of the lower case on each side. The vertical spindles terminate in a taper and small ball drop. The brackets are attached by round mortise and tenon joints and glue. On the right side, slightly below where the bracket attaches to the corner column of the lower case, a round hole or mortise was cut into the column and then plugged.  Lifting the slanted section of the case top allows access to the interior of the desk. There is no evidence of a prop to hold the lid up; the range of motion of the hinges would allow the lid to fall back to rest on the gallery, which may have caused breaks. The interior surfaces are veneered with figured maple. A separate interior unit, constructed as a box with an open front and back, is fitted into the rear section of the interior. This insert has two pigeonholes over one small drawer to each side, with a larger cubby in the center. The center cubby has an oxbow valance at the top. The right corner of the valance has broken off. The interior unit is made from diffuse porous hardwood, likely tulip poplar; behind the insert, the veneer on the back of the case is visible. The drawers rest on the base of the insert and run the full depth of the interior unit, stopping at the back of the case when closed. The drawer fronts are solid and sit flush with the edge of the interior unit when closed. The sides are full height with a flat top edge; the drawer backs are slightly less than full height and also have a flat top edge. The drawer bottoms are single side to side boards, chamfered at the front and sides. Dovetails connect the sides to the front and back of each drawer. The drawer bottoms were let into grooves on the sides and front of the drawers and glued in place. Shrinkage of the wood has pulled the drawer bottoms out of the front grooves. The drawer bottoms are nailed to the drawer backs with a single off center nail. The drawers each have one small turned knob of a dark porous hardwood, attached with glue and round mortise and tenon joints to the drawer fronts.  The lower case is framed around the top with an unidentified ring porous hardwood. The frame is reinforced by nails and attaches to the bottom of the upper case with glue blocks.  The right side of the case holds four drawers of equal size, arranged in a column, while the left side has a column of four false drawer fronts. The drawers rest on runners of an unidentified ring porous hardwood inside the case. The runners are nailed to the drawer dividers at the front of the opening and to rear supports between the runners at the back of the opening. There are drawer stops glued at the back of the opening. The piece has three drawer dividers, as well as front and bottom rails that are part of the framed top and bottom of the case. The dividers and rails are an unidentified ring porous hardwood, faced with figured maple veneer. The bottom rail also has an applied half round bamboo style molding. The dividers attach to the case front and back with double mortise and tenons. The tenons appear to be angled similarly to a dovetail.  The drawer fronts are covered by a horizontal figured maple veneer, and have an applied half round bamboo style molding, nailed on, slightly inset from the edge. The molding forms a rectangle with mitered corners. The drawer sides are full height with flat top edges. The drawer backs are less than full height, with a slight chamfer on each edge. The drawer bottoms are a single board, running side to side; wood shrinkage has pulled the drawer bottoms away from the fronts. The sides of the drawer are attached to the drawer back by dovetails and nails, and attached to the drawer fronts with half-blind dovetails. The drawer bottoms are let into grooves in the drawer sides and front, and nailed to the undersides of the drawer backs. The rabbet edges on the drawer bottoms that slide into the grooves appear to have been cut mechanically; there are overcuts on each face of the rabbets, and the rabbets are wider than necessary.  The drawers each have two turned wooden knobs, probably maple, probably attached by a round mortise and tenon. The knobs are a flattened mushroom shape, with an incised ring around the top section accented with black paint. The knobs terminate in small balls. At the center top of the drawer front, below the applied molding, is a keyhole with a metal, likely brass, keyhole surround. The lock also appears to be brass.  The four false drawer fronts on the left side of the case mimic the appearance of the actual drawer fronts. They are made from an unidentified ring porous hardwood and faced in figured maple veneer. A half round bamboo style molding is applied slightly inset from the edge, forming a rectangle with mitered corners. The false drawers have two turned maple knobs like those on the actual drawers. These are attached by through mortise and tenon, visible from the inside of the case. Six of the eight knobs are loose, and one is missing the ball accent. The false drawer fronts do not have keyholes. Each false drawer attaches to the rear supports at the back of the drawer opening with six glue blocks. The rear supports, acting as drawer dividers for the false drawers, are faced on the outside with figured maple veneers. The bottom rail also has an applied half round bamboo style molding.  The front of the lower case is panel framed. The panel is inset on the exterior and sits flush with the frame on the interior. The panel seems to be rabbeted to a rabbet on each frame element. There is a significant gap between the frame elements and the panel on the interior, particularly at the top. This gap is partially filled by a thin strip of a lighter colored wood applied to each of the frame elements; this strip is slightly thicker on the side elements of the frame. The side and bottom frame elements are an unidentified ring porous hardwood. The top frame element is a fine grained diffuse porous hardwood, likely tulip poplar. The panel is a ring porous hardwood, possibly chestnut or oak, and is composed of two vertically oriented boards. The exterior surfaces of the frame and panel are veneered with a figured maple. The veneer on the panel is in two pieces, but the join does not correspond to the join in the two boards of the panel. The bottom frame element is splined to the vertical side frame elements; the join between the top and side frame elements is not visible. Applied half round bamboo style moldings form a rectangle with mitered corners on the front panel, inset about two inches from the panel edge. The bottom edge of the frame also has an applied half round bamboo style molding. The left and right corners are covered by three quarter columns in a bamboo turned style. A line of wear across the front of the piece at a height of 16.25 in. (41.3 cm) corresponds to the height of the front seat rail on the chairs in this set of objects.  The back of the piece is finished and constructed in the same way as the front, excluding the line of wear at chair height. On the interior, the thin strip applied to the top frame element has been partially broken.  The bottom of the case is constructed as a frame, made from unidentified ring porous hardwood. The frame elements are nailed together and may also have mortise and tenon joints. The front to back frame elements are dovetailed to the front and back of the case; the side to side frame elements do not appear to be directly attached to the case front and back. The front to back frame elements also act as bottom rails for the drawers and false drawers, and have applied molding as previously described.  The piece has two front and two back feet, all in the same style. The underlying shape is a snake foot, with two rings of six carved half spheres on a background textured with zig zag gouges. The characteristics of some areas of secondary wood are consistent with tulip poplar, including the greenish color and diffuse porous structure. Other areas are consistent with chestnut, particularly the ring porous structure with large pores, and lack of visible ray fleck. These components could also be oak. The remaining secondary wood components are ring porous but cannot otherwise be identified. Textiles, leather remnants, and hardware components are visible on the piece. Vaughn, who advertised primarily as an upholsterer. Vaughn was active in Boston from about 1862-about 1874. City directories identify him as an upholsterer employed by Henry A. Turner or Henry A. Turner & Co. from 1862-1867. He is listed under his own name from 1868-1869 and under John J. Vaughn & Co. from 1870-1873. In 1872 and 1873, Charles J. Blaney is listed as a partner in the firm. Some of the city directory listings for John J. Vaughn & Co. state that the company manufactured furniture as well. It is possible, however, that Vaughn only retailed the set and that it was made elsewhere; the faux bamboo treatment is commonly associated with New York City.  John J. Vaughn relocated to Haverhill, Massachusetts, sometime between 1874 and 1876. An 1877 Haverhill newspaper includes an advertisement for J. J. Vaughn, Interior and Exterior Decorator.
