The exterior surface of the slant-front lid is inlaid with light wood stringing that forms two side-by-side rectangles. Within each rectangle is inlaid a light and dark wood eight-pointed star. The lid opens to reveal a central prospect door with incised lines forming an arch at the center. Document drawers with applied half-columns flank the prospect door. On either side of the case interior are four valanced pigeonholes over two side-by-side blockfront drawers, each with a single knob. Below the writing surface are four graduated full-width drawers; lopers flank the uppermost drawer. Each drawer front is inlaid with light wood stringing that forms two side-by-side rectangles. The edges of the drawer fronts are molded. The slant-front lid and full-width drawers each have a central bat-wing escutcheon; the lid and top three drawers have locks. Each full-width drawer has two bail pulls on solid bat-wing back plates.
