The back of the chair is rectangular with a curved profile. The central slat is composed of latticework within a rectangular frame; there are small wooden circles where the diagonal components of the latticework cross. The lower slat is solid and painted. The back tablet is pinned to the rear stiles and decorated with a painted Greek key pattern. The rear stiles have gilded ring turnings just above the seat. The rear stiles are cylindrical at the base and flatten towards the top. The tops of the rear stiles are flattened at the front. The compass seat is framed with an original rush seat. The rush seat is painted, and may have originally been painted white. The front corners of the seat have two triangular, chamfered blocks that are painted green with yellow stenciling. The curved seat trim is nailed to the seat and decorated with green paint, yellow stenciling, and gilding. The chair has four cylindrical and tapered legs, with the back legs gently racked back. Mortise and tenon joints secure the legs to the seat rail. The chair has one front stretcher, one rear stretcher, and two stretchers on each side of the chair. The front stretcher has ring turnings on either side of a central, flattened diamond section. There is painted decoration on the top and bottom of the front legs and front stretcher. The front legs terminate in tiny bun feet. The front right bun foot appears to have been replaced.
