(172.7 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Empire-style, square piano constructed of mahogany with rosewood and mahogany veneers and inlaid with brass and rosewood stringing, with pine as secondary wood.  A board hinged to the unfolding top opens to give access to the keyboard of 74 keys and the keywell, which has foliate painting flanking a brass nameplate inscribed:[Manufactured for / JAMES L. HEWITT & Co. / Nos 34 & 36 Market St. / BOSTON]. In the rounded corners of the keywell are additional painted motifs of classical design with an urn at center. Decorative banding outlines the keywell. The case features veneered tablets framed in inlay. The top opens fully to reveal the hammers and strings. Brass banding is applied along the top and bottom edges of the lower rail of the case; the upper band is spiked and the bottom band is beaded. On the far left and the far right of the case front, below the bottom rail, is a single drawer with a knob. Intricately carved curved brackets connect the interior sides of the drawer openings to the underside of the lower rail. The case sits on six legs with cast fire-gilded mounts at surmounting bulb, reel and spool turnings, acanthus-inspired carvings, and reeded shafts. The legs terminate in castors with cylindrical cuffs.
