The chair back is square with a slight upward flair and rounded shoulders. The shoulders are separate pieces of wood joined to the crest rail and rear stiles. The three vertical turned spindles are set into the topmost of two horizontal turned spindles. The profile of the chair back is angled slightly back. The rear stiles are continuous with the back legs and the seat rail is set into the rear stiles but the construction is not visible. The seat is slightly trapezoidal and has replaced upholstery. Split bamboo turnings are applied to the outer front and sides of the seat with a miter joint. The front and rear legs are tapered with bamboo turnings. It is not apparent how the front legs are attached to the seat rail. Each side of the chair has two turned bamboo side stretchers. The chair has one rear stretcher that is lower than the single front stretcher. Three bamboo turned elements form a decorative bracket between the front corners of the seat rail and the front stretcher. The horizontal elements extending from the leg terminate with a concave taper into a small ball. There are holes on the undersides of the legs, likely indicating that slides or castors were once attached. At the back of both rear stiles opposite of the seat is a hole likely from a lost decorative element. The whole surface of the chair has remnants of a brownish paint likely applied to enhance the graining. There are also periodic spots of green paint."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"7/25/2018"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Under the seat on the interior side of each leg: curved chisel mark resembling a half moon (see photo DAPC_2017-5012-006)."},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"Based on visual examination."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Maple; Upholstery materials; Paint"},{"label":"Style","value":["Eastlake"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Family history identifies this piece as part of a wedding gift in 1871."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1871"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"John Vaughn worked in Boston in 1871, when the set was purchased."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Basis of Maker Attribution","value":"Rosamond Warren Gibson (1846-1934) wrote that the bedroom set, a wedding gift from her parents in 1871, was purchased from \"John Vaughn.\" The only Boston-area furniture maker or retailer working in 1871 is John J. Vaughn, who advertised primarily as an upholsterer. Vaughn was active in Boston from about 1862-about 1874. City directories identify him as an upholsterer employed by Henry A. Turner or Henry A. Turner & Co. from 1862-1867. He is listed under his own name from 1868-1869 and under John J. Vaughn & Co. from 1870-1873. In 1872 and 1873, Charles J. Blaney is listed as a partner in the firm. Some of the city directory listings for John J. Vaughn & Co. state that the company manufactured furniture as well. It is possible, however, that Vaughn only retailed the set and that it was made elsewhere; the faux bamboo treatment is commonly associated with New York City. John J. Vaughn relocated to Haverhill, Massachusetts, sometime between 1874 and 1876. An 1877 Haverhill newspaper includes an advertisement for J. J. Vaughn, Interior and Exterior Decorator. In 1880 he is listed as a commission merchant in Haverhill."},{"label":"Maker","value":["Blaney, Charles J., upholsterer, interior decorator, and furniture retailer, active about 1872-1873","John J.
