There was a Joseph Ward, a clockmaker, in New York City around 1735, but this Ward may be related to the Anthony Ward who practiced the craft in Philadelphia and in New York. The case looks similar to examples from New York, but should not be confused with those pieces.    "The domed hood is missing and the present top board is an early nineteenth-century replacement. The painted trim spandrels above the clock face appear to date from the mid-nineteenth century, possibly replacing pierced fretwork. On the pedestal, the bottom molding is an incorrect replacement for the original feet. (Any restoration of the missing parts of the case would probably be based on the case of the Boston clock with works by William Claggett [1696-1749] of Newport, Rhode Island, in the Redwood Library in Newport, which is remarkably similar to this one both in cabinetwork and decoration.) The condition of the japanning is varied. Most of the gesso ornaments on the glazed door are replacements or missing, and the flaking along the grain of the wood has been crudely inpainted. However, the latticework and other linear gold painting directly on the tortoise-shell background is in good condition. The decoration on the front of the shaft is remarkably undisturbed; that on the sides is flaking along the wood grain. On the pedestal the gesso ornaments are mostly gone and the whole has been overpainted. Recent flaking has exposed the vermilion under paint. The clock was owned by Henry Francis du Pont and then the Henry Francis do Pont Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Delaware, until about 1956 when it was traded to the antiques dealer Harry Arons for the great Boston japanned clock with works by Gawen Brown (1719-1801), now in the Winterthur Museum. The clock was later owned by Anthony J. Sposato and was sold at the auction of his collection (Richard A. Bourne, October 29, 1985, Lot 60). Japanned tall-case clocks are rare. The decoration on this one has an elegance and refinement superior to most of the other japanned work in the Museum?ÇÖs collection. The decoration has close parallels not only to that on the Claggett clock in the Redwood Library but also to the Brown clock in Winterthur Museum." (Heckscher, "Boston Japanned Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art," Antiques 129, no. 5 (May 1986): 1060."},{"label":"Subjects (AAT)","value":["Tall case clocks","Floor clocks"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Longcase clocks"]},{"label":"Bibliography","value":"Article: Morrison H. The hood has a cove molded cornice with a flat top and two turned, three-quarters column at the front corners. The door of the hood is glazed and has an arched opening. Inside the hood is a brass tombstone dial with Arabic minute numerals and Roman hour numerals and applied case Rococo decoration in the spandrels and lunette. The boss is engraved with [Joseph Ward], the maker of the clock works. The second dial is located above the pierced hands. Below, a calendar aperture displays the day of the month. An engraved motif repeats between each Roman hour movement. The clock has eight day movement.    The waist has cove molding at the top and a door with applied ovolo molding along the edge. The base has ovolo molding at the top and the cove molding at the bottom is a replacement for the original feet.    The case is decorated with a tortoise shell finish and eastern-inspired motifs of flowers, animals, and people situated in eastern style buildings and landscapes.    The domed hood is missing and the present top board is a replacement from the early nineteenth century. The painted trim spandrels above the clock face is thought to have replaced pierced fretwork. The top and feet of the clock are modern replacements that were added sometime after 1986, when the Met acquired the piece."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"10/3/2017"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Engraved on dial: [Joseph Ward]."},{"label":"Materials","value":"White pine; Brass"},{"label":"Style","value":["Queen Anne"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range provided by owner."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1730 - D:00 M:00 Y:1740"},{"label":"Basis of Origin","value":"Place of origin based on characteristics of style, as a majority of Japanned furniture were made in Boston."},{"label":"Place of Origin","value":"Boston, Massachusetts"},{"label":"Basis of Maker Attribution","value":"Dial engraved by maker."},{"label":"Maker","value":["Ward, Joseph, clockmaker, active about 1740-1760"]},{"label":"Other Name","value":"Long case clock; Grandfather clock; Grandfather's clock; Longcase clock; Tall clock"},{"label":"Object Type","value":["Clock"]},{"label":"Object Use","value":"Household accessories"},{"label":"Category","value":"Furniture"},{"label":"Title","value":"Tall case clock"},{"label":"Date Modified","value":"7/16/2018"}],"description":"Tall case clock","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/a55d85a9-9d69-4500-82fc-1df918759c30/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_1987-0048-001_front","height":1200,"width":422,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/252385cd-2f7d-46c5-9b64-0b6e55b5dfc2/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/252385cd-2f7d-46c5-9b64-0b6e55b5dfc2","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1200,"width":422},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/a55d85a9-9d69-4500-82fc-1df918759c30/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/252385cd-2f7d-46c5-9b64-0b6e55b5dfc2/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/a55d85a9-9d69-4500-82fc-1df918759c30/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"dapc_1987-0048-002_trunk","height":1200,"width":512,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/18993c6c-2264-4816-9896-34d164017c77/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/18993c6c-2264-4816-9896-34d164017c77","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":1200,"width":512},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/a55d85a9-9d69-4500-82fc-1df918759c30/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/18993c6c-2264-4816-9896-34d164017c77/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/252385cd-2f7d-46c5-9b64-0b6e55b5dfc2/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/winterthur/iiif/logo"}
