The upper case consists of a bookcase fitted with glass-front doors, shelves, small drawers, and pigeonholes. The lower case consists of a fall-front writing surface atop four graduated drawers.  Upper case: The single-board bookcase top overhangs the edges of the case at the front and sides. Cove molding flanked with two rows of cock-beading spans the depth of the overhang. The case top is surmounted with a pediment along the front and side edges. The pediment consists of rectangular plinths connected by boards with cyma-curved top edges. The large, central plinth on the front of the case and smaller plinths at each of the case top?ÇÖs four corners are surmounted by thin boards with slightly overhanging quarter-round edges. The front-facing surfaces of the plinths along the case front are outlined with dark and light wood banding. The front, central plinth is surmounted with a brass ball and eagle finial; the two smaller plinths at the front of the case are surmounted with brass spike finials. The wooden elements of the pediment are attached to the case top with screws and glue blocks. The horizontal boards forming the bookcase back are attached with screws. The bookcase bottom, composed of two boards attached with glue blocks, has overhanging edges at the front and sides with bead molding at the base around the front and sides.  Bead molding is applied to the front and sides of the bookcase just above the two bookcase doors. Glass is set into the panel-framed doors and held in place with bead molding applied on both the exterior and interior edges of the glass. Wooden beading is applied diagonally to the front of the glass to create a diamond pattern. Inside the bookcase are two fixed shelves with bead molding at the top and bottom of the front edge. Books were not removed from the shelves during examination. Below the shelves are three drawers in a row above seven pigeonholes. The solid drawer fronts each have a small brass pull. The full-height drawer sides are dovetailed to the drawer fronts and drawer backs. Small projections on the drawer backs act as stoppers. The undersides of the drawer bottoms are chamfered along the front edge. The drawer bottoms are let into grooves in the drawer front and drawer sides. The grain of the drawer bottoms runs side to side. The drawers rest on the top surface of the pigeonholes. The vertical dividers from the drawers are thin pieces of wood with a half-round molding on the outer edge. The center pigeonhole is the size of two of the other pigeonholes. All the pigeonholes are fitted with flattened arch valences. The large center pigeonhole?ÇÖs valance has a center drop that duplicates the design of the other arches.  Lower case: The top of the lower case was not visible because the upper case was not removed during examination. Cove molding outlines the area on which the upper case sits. The case back is composed of horizontally-oriented boards that are butt-joined and secured with screws. The case sides are each composed of one board. The case bottom consists of two boards attached with glue blocks and screws. Bead molding is attached to the underside of the bottom board along the case front and sides. Curved skirt elements are applied to the case front and sides. The skirt has been repaired. The case rests on four French feet attached with glue blocks and screws.  The desk?ÇÖs writing surface consists of one fixed leaf and one hinged leaf. When closed, the leaves sit at a slight downward angle. Both boards are covered with green baize on the writing surface. The hinged leaf rests on two lopers. Each loper has a round brass pull.  The case has four graduated drawers. The lower three drawers are full width; the top drawer is slightly narrower because it is flanked by the lopers. The drawer fronts are veneered with figured mahogany and outlined with applied bead molding. The full-height drawer sides are dovetailed to the drawer fronts and drawer backs. Nails are used to reinforce the dovetails at the drawer front. The drawer bottoms are composed of two boards with the grain running side to side. The undersides of the drawer bottoms are chamfered at the front and side edges. They are let into grooves at the drawer fronts and drawer sides and nailed to the undersides of the drawer backs. Each of the drawers is fitted with two brass bail pulls, brass keyhole surround, and locks. The three upper drawers rest on runners set into grooves in the case sides and secured with nails. The bottom drawer rests on the case bottom.
