Emmons auction dates the desk as about 1805, but the Antiques (June 1955) advertisement for the same auction has the item dated as about 1780. It?ÇÖs more likely to be the later date of 1805 (or 1806, as noted on the DAPC sheet) based on known working dates of the makers. Because the advertisements were for the same occasion, there is no reason to believe this is a conflict of date attribution rather than an error of editing. A letter written November 21, 1962 by Richard H. Randall, Jr., MFA, Boston to Winterthur research associate, John J. Evans, Jr., addresses place of origin attribution theory. Randall shares with Evans that there are other pieces of furniture related to this tambour desk that portray a New Hampshire taste in inlay and structural feature, and furthermore, that the structure is opposite from work done by Seymour or other Boston makers. Randall suggests that characteristics of the piece reflect Portsmouth style preferences as well, such as the "combed" crest atop the desk as it appears on a Portsmouth-made secretary. Randall concludes the speculation by adding that it is interesting the piece was found in New Hampshire. He does not seem to be arguing attribution, but perhaps suggesting that the style may not be limited to Boston taste only or else that the provenance may be outside of the business establishment in Boston."},{"label":"Subjects (AAT)","value":["Tambour desks"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Tambour desks"]},{"label":"Bibliography","value":"Advertisement: "Chuck?ÇÖs Country Corner Auction, New England?ÇÖs Most Talked About Antiques Auctions," Antiques 67, no. 6 (June 1955): 523. (Chuck) Emmons at an auction advertised as selling items from the Lord Mount Temple of Romsey, Hampshire and the Charles Bennett Family, who were early New Hampshire settlers, Sanbornville, N.H., 1955. According to Emmons, it seems safe to assume that this desk was in the possession of the Bennett family. Sold August 7, 1962 at the sale of Mrs. Rupert V. The upper section of the desk consists of two drawers, tambour doors, and a central prospect unit. A crest surmounts the top, flush with back edge. At center of the crest is a convex semi-circle (resembling a rising sun) flanked by convex semi-circles and shark-tooth carvings. The crest slopes down on either side and terminates at the back left and right corners with minute convex semi-circles. Below the crest and a thin layer of applied molding are two drawers, framed in checkered inlay and lightwood veneer. The sides of the upper case feature vertical rectangles bordered in checkered inlay and lightwood veneer. Set within the veneered side panels are tambour doors, with knobs, flanking a central prospect unit. The door of the central prospect unit, with a keyhole on the left side, is framed in decorative inlay and dark wood veneer and a second string of checkered inlay around lightwood veneer and a vertical oval veneered in satinwood. The tambour doors open to reveal two drawers, both with one knob each, above three pigeonholes. The lower case consists of an unfolding writing surface and four graduated drawers. The folding edges have decorative inlay. The unfolding surface sits on two lopers with knobs and framed in checkered inlay. Within the lopers is a drawer smaller in width and height than the lower drawers. All drawers consist of two oval knobs and a central keyhole surround. Drawers are framed with thin strips of decorative molding, dark wood veneer, checkered inlay, and a rectangular section of lightwood veneer. Between the last drawer and above the front skirt is a strip of checkered inlay. The front and side skirts are cyma-curved and the feet are bracket. According to W.P. Emmons, around 1955, the drawer pulls are not original, the backboard on top seems to have been added (otherwise it is original), and the 2-drawer and 3-pigeonhole interior has its original saffron yellow paint, cherry and figured maple. Former Winterthur research associate, John J. Evans, Jr., the veneer on the skirt has been repaired as of 1962."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"10/17/2017"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Printed, paper label atop the lower section (visible when tambour case is removed): [THAXTER & ROUSE, / Cabinet and Chair Makers, / ANN STREET, / THREE DOORS SOUTH OF THE DRAW BRIDGE / BOSTON]."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Cherry; Figured maple; Satinwood; Unidentified metal"},{"label":"Style","value":["Federal"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Date range based on known working dates of the makers."},{"label":"Date (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1806 -
