This text discusses William Foster (1745-1821), a Boston merchant who marked his  furniture with chalk at the beginning of the Revolution.    Institutional records indicate that the chair was owned by the minister of the First Church of Dedham until about 1830, when it was sold to Paul Alden. Paul Alden gave the chair to his mother, Rebekah Newell Alden. It then passed to Elizabeth Alden Hewins (daughter of Rebekah), Louisa Hewins (daughter of Elizabeth), and George S. The elaborate intertwined pierced splat has a central floral motif of delicate looped carving with bell flowers carved at the center. The crest rail has a shallow raised carving in a floral motif that terminates in a central foliate drop. The crest rail, rear stiles and arm supports have molded front edges. The arm supports terminate in scroll carved hand-holds. The front legs have a bead carved onto the outside corner. The chair may bear its original over-the-rail upholstery attached with round headed brass tacks.    Mortise and tenon joints are used to join the splat to the crest rail, the arms to the rear stiles, the legs to the frame of the seat, the frame of the seat itself, and the side stretchers to the legs. The medial stretcher is attached to the side stretchers with blind half-dovetails.    The leather upholstery is torn in places.
