The dressing class is in two sections: an upper section consisting of a pivoting looking glass and a lower case holding four horizontally-aligned drawers. The mirror is braced by two backward-canted, reeded posts, topped by spool-turned plinths with ball finials. S-curved brackets with spurs and volutes are fitted with two brass thumbscrews that allow the mirror mobility. The looking glass has a torus-molded and veneered frame with cast-composition rosettes on square blocks inset at the corners. The four drawers in the lower case each have circular stamped brass pulls with foliate edges. The center two drawers are both rectangular and each have a keyhole and a locking mechanism, flanked by two knobs. The outer two drawers are square with one knob each. The case stands on four ebonized ball feet. Hoy inscribed his name on the underside of one bottom drawer. According to Mussey (2004), the mirror glass and the rosettes at the corners of the mirror frame are possibly original. The Winterthur object record shows that sometime between 1973 and 2004, brass finials were added to the tops of the reeded posts."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"1/19/2019"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Inscribed in pencil underneath of one drawer, not photographed; Transcription provided by Winterthur object record: [Hoy]."},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library identifies the primary wood used as mahogany, crotch-mahogany veneer, and eastern white pine, one all drawer fronts, and the secondary wood as American tulip poplar based on Mussey (2004)."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Mahogany; White pine; American tulip poplar; Brass; Glass"},{"label":"Style","value":["Empire"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Approximate date range of 1810-1812 provided by Mussey (2004).
