(29.2 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Japanned Queen Anne-style eight-day movement tall case clock with black and red mottling as the backdrop for the chinoiserie motif.  The top of the hood is molded and arched with blind fretwork backed by gold-colored fabric in the tympanum. Two gilded urn-and-flame finials are positioned at the front corners of the hood. There are arched sidelights. Posted at the front corners are smooth, turned three-quarter columns and at the back corners are quarter columns. A glazed door with an astragal top opens to reveal a composite brass dial with an applied chapter ring with Roman numerals indicating hours, Arabic numerals indicating minutes, and scrolled and pierced hour and minute hands. The spandrels are decorated with applied cast ornament. In the lunette is a rocking ship mechanism within a painted ocean wave setting. Inside the chapter ring is an applied seconds dial, a calendar aperture, and a nameplate engraved: [Gawen Brown / Brattle St / BOSTON].  The trunk has cavetto and ovolo molding at the top. The hinged trunk door has molded edges and an astragal top. On the left side is a keyhole and lock.  Cavetto molding punctuates the bottom of the trunk as it transitions to the base. Stepped molding surrounds the bottom of the base, which has a central, shaped drop pendant and four curved bracket feet.  DAPC photographs and documentation indicate that the clock has gone through changes over time. Prior to 1989, the clock (then unfinished and unrestored) had significant deterioration to the japanning. Atop the hood was fretwork and three ball-and-spire finials mounted to plinths. Between 1989 and 1993, the hood has a sarcophagus top with three gilded urn-and-flame finials mounted to plinth; two at the front corners and one central. The tympanum had blind fretwork, but the color of the backing material was a dark shade. The sarcophagus top was removed sometime before 1993 and the hood did not have finials and featured just the molded, astragal arch. Sometime before 2011, two finials were added to the top. According to the condition report by Sotheby's NY (January 21, 2011), sale NO8710, lot 269, the japanning was in good condition as of 2011, with the base having received the most restoration.
