The rear stiles are joined to the seat rail. The back is entirely upholstered, so the joinery is not visible. The arms are each made from two pieces of solid mahogany, joined to the frame at the midpoint of each side rail with visible pins. There are three pins on the left arm, and one pin on the right. The compass seat is framed with round mortise-and-tenon joints. There is one damaged, curved, support block positioned on the underside of the seat between the two rear legs, as well as two additional corner blocks, one behind each of the front legs. All of the support blocks are attached to the rail with large, flat head screws. The underside of the seat shows evidence of repair attempts, including glue and the remains of aging tape. There are visible, irregular saw marks on the inside of the seat rail and the curve of the corner blocks. Further examination of construction details is prohibited by the upholstery covering the chair back and seat. The chair has been reupholstered. The show cover is trimmed with a row of decorative brass nails the full circumference of the seat. There are uniformly shaped but irregularly spaced holes along the bottom surface of the seat frame, suggesting that the seat was once upholstered over the rail. A thin piece of reeded wood is applied with glue to the surface of the front seat rail. Positioned within the frame, above each of the two front legs, are solid mahogany blocks, ornamented with a floral motif on both visible faces. All four legs have a therm profile. They all have ring-turned elements near the rail and the foot, and terminate in turned feet. The front legs have decorative reeding. The rear legs are canted. The legs are joined to the seat rail with mortise-and-tenon joints, visible on the rear legs."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"1/25/2019"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Engraved metal plaque, screwed into back, exterior surface of seat rail: [ONCE OWNED BY JOHN HANCOCK]."},{"label":"Basis of Materials","value":"Cabot (1979) identifies the wood as fruitwood.
