(54.6 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Mahogany and mahogany veneer Federal or Empire-style desk and bookcase with white pine as a secondary wood.  Upper case: The top of the upper case is composed of seven boards forming a framed construction. One board runs horizontally across the top while two boards run vertically, all intersecting with a nailed bead and ogee molding, which is built up around the front and sides. The frame boards are screwed together and secured with glue blocks. Below the molding, a plain veneered frieze extends around the front and sides. Each side of the upper case is composed of a single board with squared front edges. The case has three framed doors, each with 15 octagonal, trapezoidal, and square glass lights. Bead mullions separate the lights and surround the glass center panels. Nail holes at the upper interior corners of each door indicate that they were once decorated with fabric. They also have brass keyhole surrounds, latches and locks. Nine height adjustable shelves, three in each interior, are fitted inside of the upper case with saw tooth strips glued and nailed to the corners of the case sides and dividers. The shelves are made of pine faced with mahogany veneer. Support runners are inserted into the structure below each shelf on either side. The case back is panel framed in three sections that are not centered behind the three upper case interiors. The back is attached to the sides with screws. The upper case has a cove molding with inscribed lines around its front and sides.  Lower case: The top of the lower case appears to be composed of a single board with a half-round molding glued and nailed to its edges. The sides are panel framed with squared front edges. The lower case is divided into three sections of interiors: there is a drawer with a cupboard below on either side of a secretary desk with two drawers below it at the center.  The secretary desk is faced with horizontal book matched veneer surrounded with mahogany banding. It has four replaced brass knobs attached to two pierced escutcheons. The right escutcheon and knob is detaching. It pulls out and the front opens downward with semi-circular brass latches. The right latch is replaced. The writing surface is lined with red baize that is likely replaced. The desk interior contains two upper interior drawers with seven pigeonholes below. The pigeonholes have asymmetrical notched valences, many of which are missing. There is a double bead molding on the front surface below the pigeonholes. The interior drawers are faced with horizontal veneer and have two brass knobs. The right drawer could not be removed. The left drawer sides are full height and constructed with dovetails. The drawer bottom is composed of a single board with grain running from side to side and chamfering at the sides. The bottom is let into grooves at the front and sides and nailed to the underside of the back. The drawer rails and dividers are set into grooves and faced with bead molding.  The two doors on either side of the case are panel framed with recessed sections faced with vertical veneer. They have keyhole surrounds and locks; the lock has been removed from the right door. Each interior has two shelves that are faced with mahogany strips. They rest on supports nailed to the case sides. Door stops have been added to the case sides at the top and bottom.  The case has four additional drawers: two wide drawers below the secretary drawer and two short drawers above the cupboards. These drawers are faced with book matched vertical veneer and have keyhole surrounds, locks, and replaced bail pulls with pierced escutcheons. The drawer sides are full height and constructed with dovetails. Each drawer has a single bottom board with grain running from side to side and chamfering at the front and sides. The bottoms are inserted into grooves at the sides and nailed to the undersides of the drawer backs. The drawers rest on runners. For the wider bottom drawers, the runners are attached to the vertical dividers with nails. The runners for the upper drawers are attached in a mirror image construction. The exterior runners are nailed to medial braces that are mortise and tenoned to vertical boards of secondary wood at the front and rear corners. The attachment of the runners on the interior sides to the medial boards is unclear, but a number of regular scribe lines are visible on these medial boards. The top front rails are attached with screws, and all of the rails and dividers are faced with veneer. The upper drawers have dust boards at three quarter depth, but the lower drawers do not have dust boards.  The back of the lower case is composed of three butt joined pine boards that are nailed to the case bottom from the back and attached to the upper case with screws in pockets. The case bottom is a single board attached with glue blocks. The case has four front turned feet with a globular shape and four thinner turned rear feet.
