(48.9 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"A Queen Anne-style japanned dressing table constructed of maple and white pine. The top has notched front corners and quarter-round molded edges. The case has a long drawer over a row of three drawers, with cock-bead molding around the drawer openings. The upper drawer has a single bail pull on an engraved keyhole surround. The outer lower drawers each have a bail pull on an engraved escutcheon. The central lower drawer has an inset arch with a round metal knob at center. The skirt has serpentine arches with flat tops and two turned acorn pendants on plinths with cock-bead molding at the bottom. The cabriole legs have flat knee brackets, creased knees, and pad feet with thick pads.  The ground for the japanning is vermilion streaked with lampblack. The top has a pagoda, two figures in a boat, and the remains of a landscape background and a geometric border. The upper drawer has foliate designs on the left and flowers and architectural elements on the right. One of the outer lower drawers has flowers on one side and a fenced garden on the other; the other outer lower drawer has a fenced garden on one side and a pagoda on the other. The lower central drawer has a shell above flowers in the inset portion, flanked by columns and foliate scrolls on the flat portion. The designs on each drawer are contained within a painted border. The posts have the remains of a scrolled design. The skirt has floral designs; the pendants are gilt.  The top is made of three boards and is attached via glue blocks double pegged to the posts. The back is made of two boards and is triple pegged to the back posts. The rails and drawer dividers are dovetailed to the posts and skirt. The skirt is pegged to the front posts. The knees and feet are pieced on the sides of the front legs and the backs of the back legs.  The japanning was stabilized and cleaned in 1983-84. The gilt decoration is much worn, particularly on the top and the front posts, although much of the gesso remains on the top. The painted background has minor losses. The pulls and escutcheons on the lower drawers are copies from those on the matching high chest; the pull and keyhole surround on the top drawer are old ones transferred from the matching high chest. Single holes (now filled) on either side of the top drawer indicate that it once had two pulls. Marks in the paint on the central lower drawer indicate that it once had a drop pull on a round escutcheon. The raised gesso elements in the skirt are restorations from prior to 1909. Replacement pendants were made and added in 1978, based on a japanned high chest in Boston. The knee brackets, except for the one at the side of the right front leg, are replacements.
