The label reads: [Windsor Chair / John Johnson's / Grandfather / Nathanial(?)[sic] Hancock / brother of / Governor Hancock]. This seems to imply some connection to the family of John Hancock, who served as governor of Massachusetts in 1780-1785, and 1787-1793. The bentwood top of the chair has seven spindles tenoned through it, reinforced with nails. The top bentwood rail tapers downward to a square tenon in the arm rail, reinforced with pegs from the outside. The arm rail forms a continuous arc across the back of the chair, with swelled handholds, flat on the top and bottom. In addition to the seven spindles of the back, two spindles and a turned arm support are tenoned through the arm rail. The arm support is also tenoned through the seat.  The seat is an oval shape, with a slight pommel; it is made from a single board. An incised line surrounds the spindles, following the shape of the seat.  The legs are tenoned through the seat, and are turned, with a similar design to the arm supports. The chair has stretchers in an H-shaped arrangement. The stretchers are turned, with a swelled central section tapering to a round mortise and tenon in the legs. The connections are reinforced by nails. Scribe lines are visible on the legs to mark the placement of the stretchers.  The chair currently has a dark brown wash, thicker on the seat. Several other paint campaigns have left remnants of red, yellow, and green on the bottom of the seat. The chair has widespread insect damage.
