Case top appears to be made from a single mahogany board cut into three sections with a slight overhang along front, sides and back. There are three pin hinges joining the case top to the back. Hinges are likely brass and attached with three screws. A total of five butt hinges are used on case top to allow for keyboard access and for sound amplification. Three hinges are used for board covering keyboard section and two on the right side top adjacent to the keywell (i.e. area surrounding keyboard).  Case sides are veneered. Secondary wood(s) is not visible. Case corners are curved. Veneer design adapted across piece is composed of rectangular-shaped mahogany veneers outlined by alternating rectangular bands of rosewood and mahogany veneer. The case back is chamfered and appears to be made from one board, which runs horizontally. (View of back restricted). When top is fully closed, keyhole surround is visible at case front.  Three of the six original glue blocks remain intact reinforcing attachment of case bottom to back. The case bottom is made from at least five boards. While the type of joint is not clearly visible, it seems likely the boards are glued and joined with butt joints. There are three well-constructed side hung drawers along case bottom. The center drawer is widest, with a shallow concave curve along front. The center drawer is flanked by a smaller drawer on each side. Drawer fronts have horizontal and vertical veneer and the top edges of drawers are faced. A [98] is hammered (with a separate stamp for each number) along the top edge of each drawer. (See Marks, Signatures and Inscriptions section for additional placement of [98] marks.)  Drawer sides are full height and grooved for runners. The runners appear to be original, made of mahogany and set into a groove in case side. Drawer bottoms are made from a single board with grain running from side to side. Chamfering at drawer fronts and sides except for the center drawer, which has chamfering only along the sides. Hand dovetails join sides to back and half-blind dovetails join sides to front. Drawer bottoms are let into grove along front, sides and nailed to underside of back with hand-wrought nails. Drawers have stops nailed into case sides. Front corners of drawers have small rectangular blocks of show wood attached with glue. Veneer pattern on drawers mimics veneering across piece. Secondary wood for drawers appears to be yellow pine, an attribution made based on wood samples.  There are four front legs and two back legs slightly tapered to a castor. Their attachment to the case bottom is not visible, although legs are most likely screwed into the case bottom. Legs are turned with rings at top, a squat vase shape with rings beneath, with a reeded section below, which is arched at the top and flatten toward base, terminating in a large ring. Rings have been painted black to resemble ebony. Legs have castors attached with three screws. The legs are made from a porous wood. A thick resin on legs and presence of castors make it difficult to determine a specific wood species. There are two foot pedals extending from piano?ÇÖs case bottom. The pedal legs match the six legs which support the case. Pedals are an elongated beaver-tail shape with a flat tip, extending from front to back into a block shape, where leg attaches, and terminating in a rounded extension with a hole for pedal lever. Lever for both is an octagonal rode attached with a pin to allow movement at foot pedal.  Visible when case is opened, keyboard is of standard size. Keyboard surround is veneered. A thin band of metal, possibly brass, forms a rectangle and outlines horizontal profile of keyboard surround. At center, there is a name board engraved on brass, which reads: [MADE BY / A. Babcock / for G. D. Mackay / Boston.].  There are geometric and floral marquetry sound holes on either side of name board. The intricacy of design and regularity of cuts suggests these were produced with die, rather than being hand-cut. The keys are possibly elephant ivory and ebony. There is long, thin strip of wood covering the gap between the keys and felt pad beneath key hammers. When open, the lid/key board cover folds back onto case top and has a small hinged lip for music. A wooden latch secured with a screw holds the front lid in place when case is open. Alternatively, an additional folding stand can be extended from interior when case is fully opened and held by a painted wood support on either side of case.  Piano strings, possibly made of steel, and likely the interior felt have been replaced. The string pegs are made from a black, dense tropical hardwood, possibly ebony. Each hammer is sequentially numbered by hand in black ink. There is a bright forest green dust cover (i.e. thin removable wood panel over strings) with thin gold and black pinstriping along its periphery. Similar to drawers, a [98] is hammered on the key numbered 34.  There are wide variety of wood species used in this piano, often in very small quantities. A number of these woods remain unidentified, but were likely appropriated during the period for specific purposes based upon their particular qualities. For example, the fronts of keys are faced with an unidentified golden-blonde wood of a longitudinal cut with no visible rays and very tiny, tight pores. The sharp and flat keys are very dense and have tiny pores. The base wood for keys and support for felt underneath keys remains unidentified.
