the   Shanandoah river in a flat to the town we made but a short halt at the town the Situation   of Harpers Ferry is extremely rugged and romantic with tremendious mountains guarding   it on every side it bears the appearance of uncouthness and uncultivation after we left   Harpers Ferry we entered the foot of the South Branch Potomac mountain which is two   miles up and two down it is to be sure an enormous pile from the top of which you have a   view over a vast extent of Country and nothing presents itself to the eye but enormous   mountains and huge rocks along the west side of this pile the South Branch is Conducted   towards the Ocean from the South to the North Branch there is a tolerable good road   between which we passed through Springfield and Frankford at which latter place we   Crossed the Patterson Creek which is a fine stream and has some fine Bottoms on its   banks with the exception of these being Confined to very narrow limits by the mountains   we proceeded on we next Came to the foot of the N Branch mountain which from a   distance appears to be of the Alleghany at a distance you can trace as far as the eye can reach as it   were the back bone of the Earth lifting its towering summit to the skies we Commenced   the ascent of the mountain which did not appear to be a difficult task in Consequence of it   being a graded road we passed through some of the most beautiful and stupendious pine   and Chesnut forests immaginable some of the pine trees are more than four feet in   diameter and more than one hundred feet in heighth we travelled all day as though we   were travelling over the billows of the Ocean with the exception of the mountain being a   trifle higher there are some of the  most delightful fountains of spring water we ever saw   in the mountains there is in some places prety extensive tracts of land under Cultivation   but the soil is generaly sterile there is some wheat and Indian grown but not in great   quantities we Crossed the Penna state line about 4 miles below Petersburg and put up 1   mile west of it Considerable   tributary of the mononghahela river here we Commenced ascending what is Called Tom   Browns hill which is five miles from the bottom to the top three miles up this hill we   Breakfasted at Tom Browns he is a jolly old fellow and keeps a good house there is   nothing worthy of note from Toms to the Laurel Hill which is truly a tremendious pile on   the East side you Cannot see any thing peculiar in it from those you have just Crossed but   when you have ascended the summit you have one of the most majestic and Beautiful   sights before you we ever beheld you look down as it were in a tremendious abyss and at   the same time view a most delighful Cultivated Country interspersed with beautiful   forests flourishing wheat fields together with numerous herds and flocks of which is not a flourishing village two miles   west of this is Uniontown the Seat of Justice of Fayette County which is a flourishing   village the Country is composed of only second quality land we travelled eleven miles   west of uniontown to sandy Hollow and encamped for the night having accomplished   thirty six miles  Wednesday 8th We again Commenced our journey this morning as usual we Crossed the   Monongahela at Brownsville in a flat the U. Contemplation is to extend it to lake Erie Dayton is situated on the miami just below the   junction of mad river fifty two miles North from Cincinnati is the Capitol of of   Montgomery County it is a very flourishing place it Contains a Court house and jail two   houses of public worship there are numerous mills erected upon the mad river here we   put up making 39
