(57.8 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Renaissance Revival-style Davenport desk. The case top consists of a slant-front hinged top door constructed with five panel-framed boards. The inset center panel is covered on the exterior with a green baize writing surface. The door is hinged at the top to a fixed board with an applied carved gallery across the back and sides. The gallery has inscribed carving on the front of the back board including a semi-circular central element composed of ten rays. There are two corner pieces with scroll-carved tops and two rope-turned spindles spanning the spaces between the central carving and the corners. The notch-carved gallery sides meet the corner pieces at right-angles and the whole is attached to the desk top with mortise and tenons. The slant-top opens to reveal recessed storage space with a series of pigeon holes and one drawer across the back. The pigeon holes are arranged with a full-height section in the center and two stacked half-height sections on either side. The bottom left section contains the drawer in an otherwise identical pigeon hole. It's possible that some or all of the other sections originally contained drawers as well. The desk top sits on a lower case composed of three panel framed sides and a bank of three equally sized drawers on the right. The desk top projects forward from the lower case and is supported at the front edges by two vertical rope-turned columns that extend down to projecting frame elements of the case bottom. The front vertical edges of the lower case have applied arches with flattened center drops. The three case drawers have solid drawer fronts with horizontal bands of bead molding carved across the top and bottom and wooden keyhole surrounds applied in the centers of the top bands of molding. Each drawer front has a decorative rectangular molded brass mount with an attached bail pull in the center and a lock at the top. The drawers are constructed with machine-made dovetails at the front and rear corners. They rest on runners nailed to the interior of the case and there are two horizontal dividers between the lower drawers and a top front rail above the top drawer. The case bottom is open below the bottom drawer.
